Because of the historical relationship with England.
Lizzy (Queen Elizabeth II) is still the head of state and is titled "Queen of New Zealand" under the Royal Titles Act 1974. But as Paul McCartney once put it:

Luckily the British influence is pretty much history now. For instance in1967 the New Zealand Dollar replaced the New Zealand pound, the latter having been tied to the UK pound. I'm particular glad about the cord clamping w.r.t. food. Fish & Chips are yummy and an English breakfast is nice but the rest of English cuisine...
