If the standard DOF definition (size of the circle of confusion) is good enough then the hyperfocal distance would be the best distance to choose as "infinity-1", as it is the minimal distance that also keeps infinity "sharp".

D'oh! Of course that's it. As soon as I read it I realised how simple the answer was (given I have been doing all the maths already). And I am already calculating the hyperfocal distance (with the CoC model), so that's an easy job to use it as the limit.

This marvelous little 110 smc 50 is quite nice to focus using the markings on the lens barrel, first having confirmed them with test shots.

A quick count of the relative population of Asian counties verses western ones would give you some guidance there - all I can say is there is a long term trend in that direction, so it is probably best to get used to it
