Ross,,, has the big lens arrived yet?
Thanks for asking.

My friends got back into Timaru yesterday, and were immediately involved in some family stuff. I am expecting to get the lens from them today.

It is a nice fine spring day down here, so I am planning to test it today too, and see what works (hopefully everything) and what doesn't

FA*250-600 tests

So, the fun has begun. The power zoom function works ok, and the aperture control off the body is also good.

Where I am having issues is the focus is just racking and not hitting focus. The lens manually focusses just fine, and has fantastic image quality.

The image attached is manually focussed at 600mm

So, as far as I can see that is the only issue yet to be resolved.

I have cleaned the contacts on the lens, and continued to experiment. I don't have any other power zoom lenses, so it is a bit of learning curve for me.

Still, it is a nice sunny day here...

I've been REALLY pleased with the performance of the KP with my 55-300. The extra pixels seem to make a noticeable difference with the overall sharpness and the noise levels are very manageable.

The tui (and kereru and even the occasional korimako) have been spending a fair bit of time in the kowhai outside the front window and I've been keeping the camera nearby.

That shot was 300mm, 1/250 at f/11, ISO 3200. As shown on here I've done some processing (lens profile, noise reduction, clarity, vibrance, highlight reduction), but even straight out of the camera it is remarkable (to me).

Here's a 100% crop completely untouched from the camera. Look at that feather detail! I can even see the corner of the house reflected in its eye.

Very nice image and you would have to be happy with the image quality

FA*250-600 more testing

Progress is definitely being made - by early afternoon the only function I didn't have working was autofocus.

I had the lens set to 'A' to allow me to use TAv mode, which is where my K3 basically lives.

I had a wee brainwave, and thought Av mode, select aperture and lets see if it will focus - sure enough it did.

So, the only thing on the lens at this time that doesn't seem to be working is autofocus when the lens aperture is set to 'A'. I will keep exploring over the weekend to see if I can get it working with that, but I can live without aperture on 'A' if I need to.

I only have a ball head on my tripod, so static subjects only at the moment - gimbal head is on order

Just some more samples for your enjoyment. Once I have the gimbal head I will try for some bird photos.

I have to say, I love the colour this lens gives.
