Worth quoting. Normal transmission will now resume.

Should've asked to borrow a tripod - I hardly ever use it!

Well gentlemen, the sad day has come for me to make a similar trip to the one Arpe made, albeit for slightly different reasons.

If any of you are looking for a 21, 40, 70 ltd, 16-50, 540 flash, or a K10, drop me a PM. The flash in particular, I can't imagine would go for much on TM, and I'd rather "keep things in the family" as it were if possible. Everything is in excellent condition, except the K10 which has a few bumps and scratches.

Need to raise the funds yet, but I'm planning on a D7000 with the 18-105 kit, 35mm f1.8 and a SB700.
I need to save for a decent telephoto as well, as I'm likely going to Africa in August - the range of options is so mind boggling though!

Yeah I know! I got the 70-300 VR, it's pretty good for what it is, maybe not safari material though. I've also got a D7000 as a 2nd camera for higher ISO stuff than the D300s, not sure how it will handle lower light sport yet though.

Two thoughts.

First, I taught my son a valuable lesson with the old K10D the other day. He was taking pictures of his new bike (a quite expensive BMX built form components) and I think I was finally able to get through to him the triad of ISO-shutter-aperture. The pics were indoor and very close up, needing considerable depth of field and therefore a lot of light. I think he cottoned on when the shutter speeds went out to 10 seconds(!) and at the same time understood the value of a tripod for a fixed scene. He also learned why flash is not always (indeed not often in my experience) the solution to poor light. Stuff we all know, but I got a bit of a buzz when he clicked to it. I'll make an amateur out of him yet. :-)

Second, I see more talk of this mythical Pentax FF. For the longest time I wondered what the attraction of a FF really was. Sure, the film purists might want everything to be as close as possible to the 'gold old days' (TM), but what actual, concrete advantage does such a beast confer? Recently I had a discussion with a friend about "35mm equivalent" focal lengths and we came to the conclusion there's actually no such thing. The equivalence is only in size of the field of view and not in the optical characteristics of the scene. In other words, if you put a 50mm lens on a film camera to get 'natural' perspective, then you'll also get 'natural' perspective on an APS-C DSLR. Some people think that a 35mm lens is "equivalent to 50mm on a 35mm film camera" but as far as I can tell it isn't. It will distort just like it does on the film camera - just less obviously with the reduced frame size. So in that sense, and also in that supposedly larger sensors suffer less from noise, I can see why a FF DSLR is different to an APS-C one and more like an old 35mm film SLR. But why is this such a big deal? (For some at least.) Is the 35mm format a holy grail of photography that neither medium format nor APS-C can compete with? I'm not for or against – I'd just like to understand.

I thought the dof was shallower
