It is not as bleeding edge sharp as my A 50 1.7 (or M 50 1.7) but it has the makings of a fine portrait lens.

I'm more and more impressed with Lightroom, which I have only recently started using. Some photos from this weekend's kayak race.

I have never taken a portrait photograph yet, so would not buy a lens just for that purpose. Some spare cash from a waterblasting job is going to my account tonight, so I'm looking at that K 55 f2 or may go for one of the other primes on TM.

I have an M 50/1.7 with some minor fungi in it - doesn't effect images, but means it has no retail value - that I haven't used in ages. I am happy to give it to you to play with around that focal length if it would be useful. It is just sitting in a bin doing nothing at the moment.

Cheers

Ross

Anyone fancy a Pentax 645D and lenses for $4,100?
Facebook Photography Group Link

PENTAX 645D - Shutter count 7.1k
Pentax D FA 645 55mm F2.8 lens used maybe 50 times
Pentax 645 FA 120mm F4 Macro Used maybe around 200 times.

Hi Mark,

Looking at your first photo, I'm seeing a lot of purple fringing on the water spray.
Over to you if this bugs you or not, but in Lightroom there are a few of ways of dealing with this:

1) Head down to the Lens Corrections section, and tick the box on the colour tab, and then adjust the amounts, either by eye droppering on the affected area, or just adjusting the sliders manually as required.
2) Head down to the HSL section, and pull down the purple slider. This works best if there's nothing purple you want to keep in the photo
3) Use an adjustment brush to drop the saturation over the water droplet areas, and apply selectively.

You can also add some clarity to the water sprays for effect, selectively via an adjustment brush.

Thank you Richard. I've noticed the purple fringing. Luckily I only used that lens (which is prone to that) for the first 10 or so photos. Thanks for the advice. I will go and do a clean up of those images.

Did you manage to get a physical copy of LR or did you get a new LR CC edition with the monthly charge?

A small amount of drop off in sharpness at the corners - nothing like the overall gain though.
An increase in fringing - at the corners obviously.
Perhaps, but make sure you are making a fair comparison.

If you are zooming in at 100% full-pixel-peeping power, you are throwing a 36MP magnifying glass on the weak spots of the lenses. In order to judge the lens problems (including resolution) fairly, you'd have to downsample the image to 16MP and then compare it to a K-30 image (or similar APS-C camera).

Now aren't these wonderful?

Plenty sharp (surely enough for the size you posted; perhaps even a bit oversharpened) but a very buttery rendering of the out-of-focus background. I don't know many lenses where I noticed both of these traits coming together so well.
