Oh, wow! How worlds collide. On my recent road trip we decided to stop off in New Plymouth on the way back from Auckland instead of the usual Rotorua or Taupo. As a result of which we took SH3 and stopped for a snack in... Piopio! We saw several shop signs with a "passerine like" bird silhouette and the missus asked "is a piopio a bird?" I thought it sounded like one but couldn't pin it down, thinking it was a name of a present-day species. Looked it up to discover this thing, extinct.

Nice little spot, Piopio. In between the trucks rumbling through it was super quiet. Has a nice little park by the road to eat your ice cream and pie. (And in the park, we discovered, a sign which had information about the bird.)

Family get-togethers for the Annabell clan must have been a little "Fred Dagg and the Trevs".... seems all first-born sons were gifted the 'Joseph' moniker....

I think that aussie Joseph is an error - not aware of an aussie connection. The 1815 Joseph was a portrait painter living at Undercliff at Havelock North. Not aware of a Hutt valley connection but the other son - John was a more established surveyor than Joseph and may perhaps been officially commemorated. From what I gather Joseph was barely qualified - a lot of his work had to be signed off by John. But Joseph had the balls to explore - some off his surveying in the Waitotaras is in what is still extremely remote country. He was also involved in the original carve up in the Waiouru area. And records hearing Huia in the back country of Hunterville.

Yes, it certainly is quite interesting geology. When I went up it with Dad and his brothers, the farmer said it was really dangerous in winter, as those tomos filled up with snow, so you wouldn't know when you were on top of one, and some are pretty deep.
I wonder if anyone's ever thought to look and see if there are any moa bones at the bottom of any?
I guess there's quite a bit of interesting NZ landscape that's either not publicly accessible or advertised.
Maybe it's a good thing Mount Cookson is neither, otherwise it would probably end up becoming a good source of Instagram influencer fossils down those tomos or at the bottom of that scarp in future.

Seriously, I wonder what the longest time lapses are? Digital cameras have come so far in 20 years. I remember in 1999, VGA resolution 640x480 with a floppy disk was considered high technology.
Some fixed webcams may have been in place for a few years I guess?
