Very nicely done. Would you be able to advice a source for blackwood? I have six dining room chairs and would like to make another two to match those six. Most of what I need would work out of 1" stock, but I'll need some 4x4" for the curved backs and 3x3" for the turned legs.

Ahhaa blackwood - the premier furniture timber. Is it from trees you grew? Got a little bit here getting to milling size.
There's a bloke here in the Wairarapa with a huge plantation - but he says he can't give it away. Pretty sad really.

I've been trying to get close to that Tui again. He sure is quite aloof.

It's only a blinking wattle and the flecking dust is a nightmare with hooks in it

Speaking of Tui photos, it was cool to see one of mine come to life.

The very talented John Archbold has painted a few of ours, using the photos as a base reference starting point.
He's based in Marton now, and is active in Marton and Whanganui fine arts groups.

Cool !
I like how the highlights on the artists grey hair mimic the neck pattern on the Tui

Nice pics, guys!

I find I'm quite picky with paintings of birds, perhaps because I spend a fair bit of time photographing them. I do have a limited edition Pauline Morse print of pied stilts that belonged to my father-in-law. I like most of her work, and not just because she lives in a very fine town!

Thanks Allister.

I've always rather liked the Plimmerton / Pukerua Bay area. If we had not moved to the Wairarapa from Wellington, that area would have been our next choice.

How much do you reckon a Pentax K-S1 is worth?

Tiny 20MP DSLR with no antialiasing filter. Has nice menus etc. All in good condition with charger and 2 batteries- one factory and one aftermarket.

Would include the WR kit lens.

Just trying to weigh up options...

Wellllllll------I would choose the K5ii you linked to a week ago over the K-S1-- but then I don't even pretend to be an average user.

Yeah different target market for sure.

The K-S1 has been really cool with the 35mm da lens. Quite a tiny combo that produces excellent results.

Size wise I think it’s very similar to the canon 200 from memory, a camera they marketed as being the lightest and smallest DSLR...

Compare camera dimensions side by side

I haven't tried painting photos of birds, but I have created paintings out of a few of my photos, mostly landscapes. I use a projector so that I can draw outlines on the paper or canvas, then paint them. For a while I thought this was cheating, until I discovered that Goldie and Lindauer used photos as a basis of quite a few of their portraits.

Unfortunately I haven't yet figured out how to command their sort of prices for turning photography into paintings, although I have heard that the value of paintings tends to go up after an artist is dead. Dying isn't currently part of my marketing strategy, so I'll just have to stick to other work and paint on occasion.

I actually have sold a few greeting cards with prints of some of paintings.
