Don't know if anyone noticed I reformatted my signature. I figured it needed it after my latest bout of LBA. I haven't done any more than test shots at macro range, but even as a walk-around f/2.8 it's very nice.
Nice. New Tamron lens?

Yup. The one someone pointed to on TM recently. Got it for the reserve and it's in excellent condition.

It nicely complements the FA 50 f/1.4 which is the only other large aperture lens I have, and adds a new capability for me with the macro. It's quite insane how close in it gets. Aimed at my keyboard, it just barely fits one key into frame!

They're a very nice macro and portrait lens.

I see there's a bargain 645z on Trademe at the the moment.

Pentax D654Z set | Trade Me

It's a lot of camera to cart around though.

I don't know why people bother with placing auctions that do not show a reserve price.

Tends to be an older generation thing, but is so artificial.
Regularly see people selling an $800 item, with a reserve of $800 but a starting bid of $50.

Yes you get lots of interest, but it's quite unrelated to your aim of exceeding the reserve.

Much prefer a starting bid of the reserver, or alternatively the car classified option, where you can negotiate with the seller.

If you go to a house auction they never start at the reserve. It's annoying but that's how auctions have been run for yonks. I agree it doesn't suit the nature of (most) TradeMe auctions.

Yep, doesn't fit the modern fast transaction concept. When we were looking at houses, we'd do a search based on the amount of money we had/what we could afford. Any house listed as Price on Application was skipped. I don't have time to play games, their loss. Looking for a car now is the same. Trademe, classified only as I'm not bidding on a car I've never seen, and with max and min price/year/kms/location filters applied.

I'm with you. Tell me how much you want for the thing and let's do a deal. All this fudging about makes me skip over. Whether houses, cars or other stuff.

I mostly feel the same, but I don't like "dealing" either. Then again, that's only because I don't have the confidence that I am getting a good deal.

When I bought my current house 17 years ago I was confident of our maximum price, research had suggested it was higher than the reserve, and we possibly only got the house because the numbers weren't on display. We bidded confidently to within a whisker of our limit, giving the impression we would just keep going, until the last competitors dropped out. If they had known we were so close, we may have had a bigger battle and lost out.

Swings and roundabouts.

Ah yes, knowing what the thing's worth is always the kicker. Problem is, seldom the seller's idea of what something is worth and the buyer's idea of what something's worth will be the same value. When we bought our house I asked the seller what he wanted and his answer was so fair that I simply said: "Let's draw up the paperwork." Not often it plays out like that.
