Revisiting old photos again. I think the biggest upgrade between K10D and K5 was a new, dust free sensor.
I gave it a full wet clean and....had a new dust free sensor..

It is sitting on the K-01 at the moment. It would be fair to say since I got the DA 20-40 zoom I haven't used it much, but because it does give very nice images I am intending to keep it.

Rather than me paying someone to clean my sensor, someone paid me! They never returned the camera though.

I have an original 40/f2.8, which is a very cute lens. Not a patch on the 20-40 for performance at the 40 end though, although the more modern 40s are possibly better than the original. But it’s soooo small!

Yes I had the little M40 too... doesn't get much love from aficionados but I liked it. The Ltd is much more colourful and sharper

I have the M40 2.8. Maybe wide open at 2.8 it is just a tad less edgy that the M50 1.7 but I get the feeling that the lens has a 3d feel to it which I wonder maybe is due to this difference.
In this shot I was iso100 1/160 and close to correctly exposed so I am thinking maybe f5.6 perhaps f8
The biggest reason I don't use it more is I seem to have little reason to fill the void between 28mm and 50mm.
Have a stack of 35mm lenses sitting gathering dust for the same reason.

Hey zkarj I was looking closely about your image thinking about the slight differences in tonal curves you apply compared to myself. (not a criticism but rather just thinking about the differences) and I noticed that there is a heck of a drop off in sharpness on the left of the rocks! And yet the skyline doesn't appear to show it. Thinking the bottom left has problems. Does this show in other images?

Yeah, I did notice that during processing. The focus point was on the distant mountains to ensure they were as sharp as possible. The rocks are less than 1/500th of that distance away and thus not really in the DOF. If I look closely at 1:1 the right edge is also soft, it just has some much stronger contrast which hides it, I think, at the lower size.

The one below looks pretty sharp edge to edge and was taken from the same spot with the same focus point, but obviously the wider focal length. A quick run of the numbers bears this out.

Shot 1: 190 mm f/8, focused at infinity, the near DOF limit is about 225 m.
Shot 2: 55 mm f/8, focused at infinity, the near DOF limit is about 19 m.

Below also is the approximate sight line over the rocks with distance scale.

In other words, it was probably a poor composition choice at f/8 and would have been solved with f/11.

It's pretty late in autumn for there to be no snow on the summit. I've driven up the Awatere Valley road when there's been snow on the ground on the road.

Yes, my first thought when we came around Lyall Bay and saw the view for the first time was "where's the snow?" But apart from a few days down to 5 degrees, it's still been pretty warm around here, often in the mid twenties.

I'd be pretty keen to see pics of the North Island from your way when you have the opportunity (or if you already have some).

This afternoon I went out into the back garden with my audio recorder to try and capture a chattering Fantail, which I did manage. But I was quite surprised when I looked up into a tree to see "that other bird that was hopping about up there" was this.

I actually tried what I mentioned previously... lift the max ISO (to 8000 instead of 6400), and set AF.C and continuous shutter. 92 shots later, I'm not sure I like this approach. It's interesting the ISO of all the shots: 4 x 3200, 4 x 4000, 2 x 5000, 8 x 6400, 74 x 8000.

Here are the other three shots I chose for processing and publication.

Here you go:

South coast of North Island from the Wither Hills taken at 500mm on the big 150-500 Sigma. I'm lucky to have the Wither Hills Farm Park only 5 minutes walk from home, so on a clear day it only takes about a 15-20 minute walk from home to get a view of the North Island, although the best views take about an hour's walk.

If you prefer sea level:
Taken with Sigma 17-70 @ 70mm from mouth of Wairau River at the Wairau Bar. I think Kapiti Island is visible to the left of centre.
This is about a 20 minute drive from home, so I don't get there as often as up the Wither Hills.

Yup, as I was looking at the photo I instantly noticed the familiar shape — though it's back to front.
