what will we find in September 2021 in Yellowstone and Gran Teton National Parks ?

we have been in that area before in late May and early June

so we saw birds nesting, harlequin ducks, fish spanning, bison and " red dogs " elk in " velvet " and various animals with young, and some but not a lot of wild flowers

now we will be there in mid September when we will be celebrating our 30th Wedding Anniversary

any one want to give us some idea of what to expect

elk rut is possible, bison rut ???

any other thoughts

thanks to any and all who can fill us in on what to expect

I have been there in several times in September. The number of visitors dwindles substantially after Labor day and both elk and bison are more obvious than at other times of the year, though I think the elk rut is a little later on. I don't know when the bison breed.

The nights are cold and snow is possible at any time. Aspen and cottonwood should be in fall colors.

Is the Nikon red? I had a P510 in red and thought it looked very nice. I was impressed with the sharpness of the lens, too.

my wife has one rule regarding my camera equipment

I bought it, I carry it

once in a while she will hold a lens while I put another one on

This pretty much goes without saying. I remember in a museum or two she's kept a second lens for me in her handbag if I wasn't allowed in with my camera backpack.

Angry Rant Time

sorry about the rant, but I have to blow off steam

last October I planned our trip in September to Yellowstone, arranged tours and lodging

then I got an email this week saying tours cancelled because of Covid issues

no problem I can buy that

then I called yesterday because one tour was not cancelled and I wanted to make sure it was still on

and the problem arose:

seems like the early morning tour was still on but our room at the Old Faithful Inn was cancelled because the part of the Inn where we were scheduled to stay is closed

the decision to cancel our room reservation was made in February They have not released our deposit

and no one told us

it is possible that by the time our trip happens, the room might be available if not, we have to find some where else to stay

we have lost time since February to try to find other lodging in YNP and now no room in YNP is currently available

the problem is the early leaving time of the tour without rooms in the Old Faithful area, we cannot make the tour

and the fact that unless I had called about the tour still being scheduled, I would not have found out about the room problem until check in

not a proper way to run a business imho

by the way Lodging at National Parks is not run by the Government but by a private business

Hi Allen

The Covid has messed up everything.
You were able to book things last October ... just Wow.
In Aus that was the last thing you would be planning at that time.
The oversight by the lodge is well not good at all regardless of the situation at the time..

we were hoping that covid would be under control by this September

We had cancelled our trip last year to Yellowstone because of Covid

now both of us are vaccinated Pfizer both shots and we are driving not flying
______________________

Yellowstone is so busy

you have to book a year ahead

I was lucky to be able to book what I did in October of last year

the National Park does not handle the reservations, it is a private corporation which books all the stays in the National Parks lodges and camp grounds

the thing about Yellowstone is they charge you deposit for the first night of your stay at a lodge but not the rest of the stay until you arrive

and you can cancel without penalty if you do so before 30 days of your planned arrival

they are starting to accept reservation for summer '22 next month

most of the lodging will be booked within days

_______

my complaint is they didn't tell me back in February so I could be checking since then if any rooms became available due to cancellation

right now, no rooms are available

I don't blame the covid related issues but I do blame them for that

Hi Allen

What is the importance of February ?
They have done the wrong thing by not informing you of the cancellation.
