Also a bit (read: a lot) apprehensive about the horrible weather and sea states in the Drake Passage.

Also high on my list. But having trouble convincing the family that somewhere like Peru would be a great destination in the next few years. Flights to South America look pretty cheap compared to Europe or especially Asia, and not that long from the US east coast.
Download the brochures from JLA - they might convince your family!

unfortunately the costs of a trip to Antarctica appear to be too high

but for those interested who would be traveling solo

On some expeditions, find a roommate
If you would like to share accommodations with another guest of the same gender, we will be happy to try to accommodate you. This program allows you to pay the per person double-occupancy rate whether or not we find a roommate to share with you. This is subject to availability, and limited to certain ships and categories. Call for details.

or with the idea of interacting with professional photographers -

Embark on an immersive Photo Expedition
Imagine traveling to a wild land with engaging people who share your passion for photography. That’s what Photo Expeditions are—special itineraries with outings timed to take advantage of the golden hours of light in the morning and evening and staffed with rosters of National Geographic photographers and certified photo instructors. Take advantage of ‘share & learn’ sessions and small group outings with Zodiac cruises and walks that focus on getting in position to get epic shots.

Antarctica Trip

My wife and I have been to Antarctica in January of 2009. We went there from Argentina (Ushuaia) on a small ship, called the Minerva, with 200 passengers. It was our 7th continent. Took lots of photographs with my Pentax. We landed somewhere almost every day over a 10 day period, getting into a Zodiac (typically two groups of 10 Zodiacs) each with 10 people after decontaminating your boots, and landing onshore by jumping in the water.

We have taken lots of trips over the years and to me, this one was probably my most favorite experience.

I've added to this post a couple of pictures from my vast collection.

I created a 15-minute video using Fotomagico (619 MB) which gives you a much better experience and which (a draft; can't locate the final) can be accessed via a Dropbox link:

This is the Australian company I used for both my trips to Antarctica:

Aurora Expeditions?: Explore the Real World

PS Note they don't do the Ross Sea trip any longer, via Australia/New Zealand. Other companies do and also use the same ship we went on. ( It had a reinforced hull so it could go through heavy ice and was one step lower than an ice breaker.)

I suspect any trip you might look at will need to be through South America as I cannot see Australia nor New Zealander being open anytime soon for tourism. We can’t even repatriate all our our citizens 18 months after COVID first appeared.
