alas the budget doesn't allow the acquisition of more equipment

16-85 and 55-300 for the K3iii
Sig24, either 31 or 43, and 77 for the K1ii (or add another prime or two if that trio doesn't feel complete enough or there's more room in the bag)
Don't forget a tripod if landscapes are part of the plan, which I'm guessing is the case.

simple but high quality kit

it is what it is

whisky distilleries tours were on my list but it doesn't look like we can fit it in

I would avoid the month of August if Edinburgh is on the wish list
Priorities, priorities!
I'm going to Islay, when I go.

Now, I’m surprised Kerrowdown hasn’t chimed in on this one.

As far as lenses go, are you planning to share the cameras? If so, UncleVanya’s suggestions seem pretty good to me for the K-3iii. For the K-1, I’d be inclined to just take the three FA limiteds, plus the 100 macro if you have room. If you need wider for landscapes with the K-1, just pan with the 31 and stitch later.

No there is no need

a few years ago I was lucky enough to win a raffle and got a KP

due to the number of camera bodies I have I sent the KP up to my son

so I expect he will have that on the trip and I will be sharing lenses with him

Given this info, why not only take the k3iii and in that way your kit and your son’s kit would both be able to leverage the same lenses and back each other up. One body each. Pick lenses that complement each other’s choices.

Adjusting my recommendations:
16-85 is a must for quick adjustments to make images appropriate to the situation in the group tour scenarios. Add to that a prime that you like that’s small and fun like the 21 or 40xs. Top it off with either the 55-300 PLM or 135. But it would help to know your son’s lenses.

The k-1 plus the 31 is a great combo, but lacks weather resistance and isn’t flexible for the group tours. If you had the 28-105 that would be a great option - albeit less flexible than the k-3iii. Because of this I’m strongly suggesting you skip the k-1 for this trip.

Trying to decide if I want full frame capability

That is why I am considering the K 1 II

On trips like this I like a backup

Remember Murphy's Law

Anything that can go wrong will go wrong

And Finnigan's corollary to it

Murphy was an optimist

If I don't take two, and the camera I take goes down, we would be left with 1 camera for the two of us

_____________

I expect daylight photography with the exception of the Royal Tattoo performance which would be at night 9:30 PM

expected sunrise/sunset in Edinburgh August 17, 2023

The performers would start at the far end with the castle as a background and march out where I would be seated in Section 9

No tripods or monopods allowed nor flash photography

Keep an eye on the midge forecast as Skye can get quite thick with midgies
