Which lenses will be improved next for digital age after 55mm?

AFAIK no others have been announced yet. Perhaps the FA 645 series will continue.

they are making a new wideangle, due to the fact that the sensor isn't full 645 frame they will be making a 28mm f/4* to help cover the wide end, translating into roughly a 21mm lens, from the look of the mockup it also has a integrated filter holder for polarizers - a similar mechanism to what they use in Pentax's super telephoto class lenses.

* from the look of the lens, from what I can see that seems to be the most logical and practical focal length and aperture. But beyond that, my crystal ball gets a bit fuzzy

Interesting! Where did you see the 28mm f4 mock-up?

Best wishes,

Ed

I have completely lost track of the source but the image is floating around there on the internet. I tried a search but with all this Buzz going on about the Pentax 645 it's hard for me to find the image I was referring to.

I also think (like dslrmagazine) that the mystery lens is a 28mm:

Thanks guys - I'd missed this one. Looks interesting...

Pentax seem to believe that the advent of this digital body needs better lenses at the wide angle end more than anywhere else. I wonder if they will do some new longer lenses too? Or do they think that the existing 645 tele lenses will do fine on this body?

I'd also like to see a prime at somewhere like 65mm f1.9 (but I wonder if that's very likely!).

As I recall the new wide angle is a 25/2.8. The conversion factor for 35mm equivalent focal length with the 645D is approximately .8, which would make it a 20mm lens in 35mm terms. A logical digital replacement for the 35/3.5.

Anyone know if this new wide angle lens will cover the full 645 frame (like the new 55mm lens does)? As opposed to only covering the reduced size frame of the 645D. Before buying one, I'd want to know it would be suitable for any potential full frame digital offerings that may come along!

I would say that would be unlikely, but it's not impossible. Bear in mind that on full frame 645 a 28mm lens is the equivalent to a 16.8mm lens which is FAR too wide for my taste, though if they keep the distortion down. Which is theoretically easier with a longer focal length I don't see why it wouldn't come in handy for architecture photography. as you should expect there hasn't been any mention on release date, however I would presume it would make it's appearance before the year is out.Pentax seems to want to get the launch of the 645Digital rolled out smoothly and with as high exposure as possible,I don't think one lens is all they will be releasing for the 645 this year. it would make sense if Pentax chose to reinvigorate their FA-645 lens line up with WR,SDM and updated coatings even if only for appearances sake.

That's good to know - I have a feeling that Pentax will one day release a full frame 645 digital, or something approaching it.

Off corse. If Pentax should decide to bring out a 50 megapixel 645D with the Kodak sensor (wich is bigger in size then the 40 megapixel sensor) all lenzes should cover that size.

The Mamiya equivalent lens (new Pentax 645 ultra-wide):

MAMIYA: Mamiya 645DF | Lenses | Sekor AF 28mm f/4.5 D |

Mamiya | Ultra-Wide-Angle 28mm f/4.5 Sek D Aspherical | 210-613

I hope the new Pentax lens will not be so expensive...

Yes - if this whole 645D system is intended to be competitive (by medium format digital standards) and make a big splash, then it's important that it delivers quality that is at least as good as the competition for a much more aggressive price. If they succumb to the temptation to go in at similar price points to the established Mamiya/Phase/Leaf/Blad options, then I believe they will lose. Their big edge here is the same quality at a much lower price.

Here's hoping that this lens is at least a good as the Mamiya alternative and much cheaper!
