The 645D is, and will probably remain, a fantasy for me, but a quick question for those in the know. If I found the money and made the leap, would those beautiful giant files mean I also had to upgrade my computer system (relatively recent Mac running OS X, Photoshop elements 6)?

Depends how much memory you have. But you should have enough CPU power, I suspect. Prior to my upgrade to a Quad Mac Pro recently, I had an older duel core G5, PPC, 12GB memory. And I was editing twice the file size of the 645D on it somewhat sluggishly but manageable. My 4000dpi scans of a 6x7 negative at 48bit were huge as well as 2400dpi of my 4x5 negatives. But most often I scaled them down to 6000x4500 ish for an editing size which were then really workable on that box and they are a breeze on my new box with CS5.

EDIT: Note, however, I'm not one to do super fancy alterations, make-overs with tons of layers on my edits.

The Japanese consumer who they're trying to cater to seems to be interested primarily in landscapes, and I would imagine that would be reflected in both the pre release samples and then the first shots after release. Wait a month or so and I bet some studio photographer will get a hold of it. I'm anxiously awaiting what Chris Willson from the Travel 67 blog will do with it for example, even though he's not primarily a studio photog.

Me, I hope there's some crazy, well-heeled, veteran wedding photographer who shoots in a documentary style that buys one. Those photos would be awesome.
Well- heeled? No. Crazy? Definately. I used my 645 for eighteen years as a wedding shooter. Cant wait to shoot my first event gig with this wonderful instrument.
