Pentax 645D hot ticket with Canon 1DsMKIII users

I had an interesting conversation with the guys at Ace Photo in Ashburn, VA yesterday afternoon. They are one of the few brick and mortar stores on the east coast that are getting any 645Ds. To make things even better, they have 10 on the way. I was amazed at the number, assuming even as good as it is it's not likely to be a high volume seller. What they said though was that 8 of the 10 are already sold and most of those went to Canon guys upgrading from their high-end Canon's. Seems even the Canoniers see the advantages to getting into a 40mp sensor for roughly 25% more $$$ than their 1Ds, and for half of what a 40mp (non-weather sealed) Hassy would cost. The owner also stocked up on Pentax 645 glass too a while back so was able to sell lenses to go with the bodies. Way to go Mo (Ace Photo owner and a Pentax Fan) & way to go Pentax for building a Canon Killer!

Mike

I want one. I had a chance to hold (drool on) and shoot a production model at PDN's expo and it was a life altering experience (well kidding on life altering but only just a little).

I was there at PDN and the drool you saw on the 645D was mine. I was there at the start and had a nice chat with Ned Bunnell. Hopefully Pentax can get their production levels ramped up without compromising quality.

The 1DsMkIII gets a mention in the mini-shoot out on Luminous landscapes featuring the 645D Versus the Phase One P40+ ....... Canon doesn't do so well and makes me even more anxious for my 645D to turn up!

I can easily understand, how just as for crop DSLR users FF can be attractive. Then for FF professionals, the lure of medium format would likewise be appealing.

They really seem to have hit the mark with the 645D
