6x7 45mm Vs 55mm

I wonder if anybody with both the 45 and 55mm lens for the P67 could do a compare shot, prefer with some foreground bits like rocks. I want to compare the field of view from the same viewpoint, and distortion (if any) at the edges. I have no doubt there both great lens so please don't post single shots using one or the other as it no help.

Well, I don't have the 6x7 lenses but I do have the 45 & 55mm lenses for a 645 film camera. I can tell you this, that the 45mm is a lot wider than the 55mm on a 645 camera. Sorry, but I don't have any good comparative images to share on that.

When I get back from the Thanksgiving holiday, I can scan a shot I did with both the 55 and 45mm from the same spot I seem to recall having if no one else posts one first.

Regarding distortion between the two, the 45 has some mustache type (barrel in the middle and pin cushion at the edges). This is only noticable when shooting something like the ocean or any really straight surface. Both the 55mm latest and the 55-100 zoom have less than the 45mm.

Here is the 45mm and 55mm shots from the same tripod mount. It was after sunset so the exposure was long, the ferry was moving and blurry.

Thanks very much Tuco, there's not a lot of choice to make is there, basicly do you want the wider angle or not. It might come down to filter size and dollar factor.

You're welcome. That was something I had but can go out and shoot another scene, something with more of a feel for scale, if you'd like.

I obtained the 45mm after confronting the limited depth of field the 55mm was giving me. I use both lenses for night work and use f/8 and f/11 for my exposures. The additional close focusing allowed by the 45 gives me further creativity in areas with foreground subjects. I needed it for this and not so much for the wider angle view.

Both lenses work great and are sharp to the corner at medium to small apertures. During the day, I can stop down fully to obtain focus from 1 meter to infinity using hyperfocal methods.

A few daytime images with the 45. Both of these were shot at f/16 and the hyperfocal infinity setting a litle beyond f/11. The closest objects near the bottom of the frames are approx 1 Meter away.

That was the primary reason why I got the 55-100 zoom. Its DOF could nearly match the 45 when the 45mm was at f/22 and the 55 was at f/32. The DOF of the 55-100 @ 55mm and f/32 is around 46 inches to infinity.

I hope to budget the 55-100 sometime. The 45 was much cheaper and easier to find, so I went down that road. The 55-100 is a great lens and could replace several lenses in a P67 kit. Time to sell off and buy a zoom? Maybe. That might lighten up the bag too!

Just to finalise this thread I picked up a SMC 6x7 45mm for $220.00 and bent filter ring that I fixed.

Hmm, bummer I purchased a demo 67 45mm late version and tried it on my 645d and the results were less then stellar at f11 infinty focus landscape image
Bad ca in the corners and very soft
Oh well must of had a bad copy

Going by every other image Ive seen from a 67 45mm I suggest you do indeed have a bad copy.

From Lloyd's test results with my 67 45mm lens -- which I believe is a good copy, since I had three to pick and they are all similar, none is too bad but nothing as sharp as the newest 67 55/f4, with CAs even readily visible on film -- on 645D it is not sharp out of the center 1/2 circle.

I believe this agrees with the others reported on this Forum (but I have no time to search and quote). I can post film scan crops to demonstrate the CA issue. As we all know, the newest 67 55mm doesn't have any CA problems like this.

The conclusion was, currently the only lens sharp to the edges (at f/8-f/16) is the 45-85mm zoom at 45mm.

I can tell you this, that the 45mm is a lot wider than the 55mm on a 645 camera. Sorry, but I don't have any good comparative images to share on that.
