645D vs Nikon D3x

Posted this yesterday, but it looks like it got lost in the crash.

At any rate, I've shot film-based 6x7s and 645s in the past, and the new 645D looks really tempting. However, I'm also very impressed with my D3x and what it can do. I would love to see a comparison between the two cameras to help me justify the leap!

Does anyone know if there are any comparisons out there between a D3x and a 645D?

Thanks

According to that test, the D3x scores higher. But what do these numbers mean? Guess you need to try the 645D, to experience ease of use and real world results. If the D3x really achieves better results on average, that would be important to know. But I don't really believe it.

The biggest difference you'll find is the massive resolution, which cant be understated. It's honestly comparing apples to oranges.

I ordered my 645D as soon as it was formally announced way back in the first half of the year - should pick mine up on Monday (fingers crossed).

In the mean time I've had the chance to borrow the demo model 645D that was doing the rounds here in Aust' as well as loan a D3x and a Hasselblad H4D-40 for extended periods.

Money no object - I'd still take the 645D any day. The only area the D3x wins (and wins easily) is frames per second, after that the 645D is better at handling high dynamic range situations, I found it's AF better and more versatile, ease of use goes to the 645D every time and the resolution ....... you just can't compare.
Apples and Oranges ... they're both fruits so still to close for me - more like comparing Apples with corn when it comes to clarity and resolution.
In the latest Nick Devlin shoot-out on Luminous Landscapes a Canon 1DMkIII is thrown into the mix, so that could be worth a look for an idea of a high end DSLR Vs MF digital.

Hey Warped, I'm really looking forward to hearing your experiences when the camera arrives.

I'm surprised to say you found that AF better than the D3x. In my limited experience with the Nikon, its AF is the best in the business right now.

The 645D is lovely in the hand, but a D3x system does beat it in versatility. Think about an image stabilized 16-35 f4, 70-200 f2.8 kit. That's going to be a lot easier to use than any MF combination. Question is the results. If everything works right, the 645D will beat its pants off in resolution, at 100% on screen, but I'm not sure how much it would show up in print up to 13x19.

Take the 1DsIII results from our mini shoot-out with a grain of salt, btw. Everyone says the 24-105 sucks (I still can't believe people send me hate mail because I so unfairly put a $1200 "Pro" lens up against a Leica...what a joke), but the results were outside what I expected from the camera. We might repeat the test sometime with "better" lenses and more control and repetition (it was a side-show to the main P40-645D contest).

That said, if you can get your hands on a D3x and the 645D side-by-side, a lot of us on here would love to see and hear about the results. If you don't beat me to it, a buddy and I might get around to this over Xmas, if we get some snow.

Cheers,

- N.

Lucky guy/gal!! Do you have the new 55mm Pentax lens too? If so, whatever the comparable Nikon prime lens for that focal length. I think that would be the best comparison to start with....two modern prime focal lenses on their respective bodies.

No it doesn't. No one in their right mind would buy a 645D for Sports. Beyond that, the D3x trails a long way behind.

Use a fixed normal lens for one shot, or maybe Macros, but then PLEASE use matching focal length zooms. This is 2010. We shoot with zooms. That's reality. How does a 24-70 compare to the 45-85? Or the 78-200 to the 80-160 and 300?

...or we could have someone machine a Leica S to 645D adapter, put R lenses on the D3x, and then have a manual stop-down-metering-a-thon. Boy that sounds like fun, and sooo true to real life use.

Slap a 24-70 (set around 42mm) on the D3x, a 55mm on the pentax and let the tests begin

I still have little doubt the Pentax is beat it, I'd just like to see by how much.

DPreview just posted RAW samples from the 645D using their Studio scene comparison system:

Nothing but impressive.
But what's even more impressive is how close the K-5 comes to the 645D when cleaned-up! - talk about a savings

I love my K-5 but it's not even close to the 645D.

Have a look at the cloth samples at base ISO using the imagingresources comparo tool. I forgot that all cloth has weave until seeing those.
