The 645-A*300mm is optical identical to the FA* (only manual focus).

If you want one or two:

Thanks for that, it's a good link. That FA 400mm f5.6 looks good also. Does anyone have experience of this lens?
I wonder how it would go on a 645 D.
I'm thinking the 300mm may not have the reach at 180mm, 35mm,equivalent.

My understanding was that the 33 X 44 sensor in the 645D has a X 0.79 "crop" factor v. 35 mm so 300 X .79=a 237 mm lens in 35 mm give or take.

This forum maintains a complete Pentax lens data and review base under the "LENSES" tab. The "M*" 300mm is more often referred as the Pentax 67 "300mm/f4 ED IF", which is of a new optical design, and one of the sharpest lens in the 67 line up besides the new 55mm/f4 -- if the user knows how to deal with the shutter shake thing. There is no CA, and it is razor sharp widely open. Even today a good used copy still often go for over $1000, an highly sought-after item.

SMC Pentax-M* 67 300mm F4 ED [IF] Lens Reviews - Pentax Lens Reviews & Pentax Lens Database

It is also my most used and cherished lens, as two sample works are shown below (the site engine resizes and re-compresses heavily the uploaded JPEGs so the original sharpness are not maintained). Currently it is on the way to be possibly part of Lloyd's 645D testing through the adapter. For an interesting comparison, is there any current FA 300mm ED IF owner willing to lend the 645 AF version to him for a direct face-up?
This is insane o_O
Is this lens any related to any 24x36 300mm f4?

Like it or not many people still use 35 mm as a reference point for understanding lens AOV.

APS-C X1.5 & 1.6 crop factor.

4/3 X2 crop factor and now the 645D.

645 film at 6 X 4.5 cm is not the same as the 33 X44mm sensor in the 645D, hense the 300mm F/4 does not the same AOV on the digital Pentax as it does on the 645 film Pentax.

Thanks for the clarification Phil, based on this, I think I'll get the 300mm. When I was in Africa in November, the 200 2.8 I was using was lacking just a little bit of reach so approx 37mm extra focal lengh will come in very handy.

As for the rest of the theory, I'm glad you guys understand it because I certainly don't!

I have just returned from a trip where my 645D spent a fair bit of time mated to a FA 400/5.6 - it is a very nice combination. While I was not able to hand hold it, perhaps someone else might. I also have the 150-300 but it did not see the light of day this time.

That's interesting to hear. Will you be posting any shots?

Guys, also just to let you know, I secured a 300mm FA f4 - (thanks for the contact Feaverbeaver) to go with the 120mm A macro.

Can anyone suggest a meduim wide lens to fill out the focal range?

Will be borrowing a 645 D over the second weekend in Feb and will make a decision on buying a body afterwards.
Cheers,
Chris

I am based in Sydney and Melbourne too - and have the 6x7 300mm f4 EDIF and an adaptor with my 645D. Maybe we should get together and do some side-by-side test shots to compare the performance?

FFordes in Britain has a 400FA listed at 750 pounds. Wish I had seen that when I got mine.

I've just received an SMC A* 300mm f4 and a Pentax 645 to Nikon adaptor. Just wondering if any bright chaps out there might tell me what the focal lengh of this lens will be when used on a Nikon D3x body?

The A* 300mm on the D3x is 300mm, no change from another 300mm lens as far as field of view is concerned.

When mounted to your eventual 645D , the A* 300mm will deliver about the equivalent FOV of a 235mm lens on the D3x.
