Pentax D-FA645 25mm f/4 [IF] SDM

this probably belongs in the rumour forum due to the fact that it hasn't materialised in the marketplace just yet. But here is a look at the new Pentax D-FA 645 25mm f/4 [IF] SDM:

To my eyes it looks like a well designed pre-production mock up lens...but considering they have gone through all this effort I am sure it won't be much longer before this lens appears on the market. It will be the widest medium format digital lens wider than any lens from Phase one, Mamiya or Hasselblad which all have 28mm lenses as their widest focal lengths.

there is an article on it on PhotoRumors, if you haven't already gathered that from the pic I used.

I'm not familiar with medium format, but what's that compartment that slides out?

It's for filters.

The little wheel is for rotating a polarization filter.

It's not a rumor and not mock-up lens. This lens will be shipped on March, 2011.

The Online Photographer: An Interview with Ned Bunnell, President of Pentax USA

NB: We did announce at Photokina (although it might have been lost in the noise with other releases) that in addition to the new D FA 645 55mm which is shipping now, we’ll ship a 25mm ƒ/4 lens early next year.

Their cameras also offer larger sensors, so for those shooting digital the 25 might be less wide anyway.

To expand, it's because you'd need some huge, 100mm+ filter to cover the front element without vignetting - probably even larger, since you'd have to mount it further the front to prevent it touching the front element. I wouldn't like to think about how much a 100mm polariser costs.

What's really interesting about that pic, though, is the Pentax-branded filter...

Maybe they'll bring back Cloudies!

maybe this comes in a box, lens, pouch and a set of filters.

Doesn't look like you'll be able to cover the front element w/ a UV filter too...looks pretty bulbous to me...

quite right ,But pentax has the option of doing the same considering the lens has a D-FA not a DA designation. I think Pentax finally realised that a more future proof design was needed for this lens And I think it will be interesting to use a 25mm lens on full frame 645

I really want to get this lens but I have a feeling it will be really pricey. Anyone got an estimate on the price?

Dealer here tells me ~ ¥270,000 street price but list higher at ~ ¥320,000 ... not sure what that means in U.S. pricing though....

Anyone know if this will be an aspherical lens?

Still great for Landscapes if it isn't, but for Architectural work it would be fantastic if it was.

I know it isn't a shift lens, but you don't always need a shift lens despite peoples perceptions.

That street price works out to about $3300 US at current exchange rates.

Yikes.

I'm not sure about what that indicates for U.S. prices which seem to be lower, though its hard to tell given v. few seem to be listed new. Have a look at Yodobashi camera for example Pentax pricing on FA 645 lenses, and you'll find some of their pricing in the ridiculous range: yodobashi.com-FA 645.

yes it will be, if you look closely on the lens barrel of the lens you will see AL - which signifies that the lens uses aspherical elements in it's design, how many and what quality?...I cannot say.
