Throw in importer/distributor costs, dealer costs, typical Aussie mark-up and GST .... guessing at least AUD$6K here in Australia if you want to buy through the authorised dealer network and get an Aussie warranty for it ........ ouch

List price now advertised (and orderable) in Japan ¥398,000. Depending on shop discount that makes the street price ¥320,000~¥360,000. Yodobashi.com- smc PENTAX-D FA645 25mmF4AL[IF] SDM AW [25mm/F4 645]

I took a look at one of the samples, and there is quite a large amount of Purple/Green fringing at the corners but I suspect software like DxO 6.5 should be able to make short work of it. I am disappointed that one of the best samples are taken at ISO 400 and hampers any demonstration of the resolution this lens is able to achieve....but I suppose the use of f/11 has something to do with that, I also get the distinct impression that these are out-of-camera jpgs.

Considering it is compatible with Full frame 645 film cameras, is indicative that pentax will eventually make a full frame 645D in the future.

Digitalis, the bottom two from the three samples taken with the new 25mm are at ISO 200, out-of-camera jpgs, sharpness 1 and 0. Given that, overall sharpness (including corners) looks great to me, the color fringing should be fixable with any RAW-converter. I hope the price comes down to 3-4k range soon.

If that is indeed the case then I'll be eagerly awaiting RAW samples, After having seen prints from the 645D one does realise how hard it really is to judge sharpness even from full sized samples from the web.

Where did you reed that? That number looks a bit high to me. Maybe total lens production for 645 at the time.

They say 400 units a month in the beginning, not sure if this means the production rate will change in time.

Given the fact that the 645D is produced at about 500 units a month. 400 a month shall be plenty enough for 4000$ lens (even if this is the average price of last gen MF lenses)

Just because a lens features an aspherical element, it doesn't have to give low distortion. Just look at the 75/2.8 for Pentax 67.
Apologies. I meant to ask if it was to be a rectilinear lens. My bad.

It is rectilinear, though distortion appears to be well under the visually obvious 1.3%

The use of an aspherical element helps improve aberrations such as astigmatism, coma and field curvature, Lens distortion is governed by the overall lens design. I wish they had used ED glass to help with the fringing - but that would have pushed the cost even higher. Although most aspherical wide angle lenses are not known for producing good bokeh effects, E.G, Nikkor 28mm f/1.4 though the Pentax FA31mm f/1.8 Limited manages to be an exception to this rule.

Well I guess all I can say is they've certainly picked pretty good subjects to put it to test by looking in the extreme corners - no pixel peeping required. At least the fringing is consistent
