Pentax 6x7 55/4 and 67 55/4 practical differences

Recently I ordered the "late" 67 55/4 lens, basically going off reviews I read here on PF and comments on the internet in general. Unfortunately the seller sent me a mislabelled lens, being the earlier "6x7" SMC 55/4. At the time I accepted a partial refund for the lens, which was fine really.

I know the later version of the lens is higher rated and supposed to be sharper, but I'm wondering how much practical difference there really is?
Has anyone compared them side by side? I am looking for a little bit of guidance as to whether it is worth now seeking out the later version, and then selling the one I have.

At this stage I'm still getting used to the 55mm lens that I have. In the first couple of rolls it looks pretty good to me. I haven't examined the shots really closely, but it seems on the same level of the 105mm for sharpness, maybe a little bit better...

cheers,
Jason

Jason, I daresay they are both very excellent lenses, and it doesn't matter very much. I have both, the early one (1979) since it was still new on the market in 1981, and the later one (1986) since 2007, good deal on a used one at B&H. The later one has one degree wider angle of view, and one less optical element. Still, it's 110gr heavier. I suspect they put in one or two aspheric surfaces to compensate for the lost element.

I have not compared them side by side, but I just have not noticed any difference in actual use. I expect you'll be quite content with the results from your 55 f4!

Thanks Dougg, I appreciate your comments. That's really what I was wondering - what the differences in actual use are. I do figure that you can't go wrong with most/all the 67 lenses, from what I have read.

cheers,
Jason

The 75 f/2.8 AL is even better than the 55 f/4. Simply an amazing lens for shooting environmental photos.
I got lucky recently and ended up with three of these rare gems. I kept the best one and sold the other two.

Isn't the practical difference a hair off of each other...? ...Or to say you could get a 16x20 image easily with the 6x7 version and a sharp 20x24 image from the 67. Yet I've read folks with the old 55mm/3.5 were happy with details when printing 16x20.

No intent to offense or disappoint anyone, but ratings on this Pentax 67 lens database agree with my personal experiences completely:

Thanks all for your comments
I might as well just continue to use the 6x7 55mm lens. I rather like the solid build of the lens and focusing.

cheers,
Jason
