Pentax 67 165mm vs. 165mm LS

Hello, I do have 165mm for my 67II, very happy with it. I am in position of buying 165mn Leaf Shutter version for less than $300 in excellent condition. Which lens optically would be better performer? I do not work in studio, primary outdoor.

Regards,
Darek.

You can look at some ratings of all the 6x7 lenses relative to other Pentax lenses in this Pentax 6x7 Lens Guide. I own both versions of the 165mm and like them both.

I've never had the opportunity to compare them side by side, although I have used both (and own the 165LS). Both perform extremely well, I suspect about the only real difference is the 1 stop brighter focusing screen that the 165/2.8 gives.

The 165 LS does have an f/32 stop for better DOF for landscape work, which the f/2.8 version does not have. The LS is a totally different design from the f/2.8. The LS is an Ernostar type like the Pentax 200mm. The f/2.8 is a Double Gauss.

I was speaking in terms of imaging abilities. I couldn't really give a hoot about the optical design.

Wheatfield; my response was directed at the initiator of this post, not you.

It has two modes. One as a leaf shutter and one as a regular lens. See the "O" next to the LS speeds? You need to arm it in the open position too for regular use. It does not do double exposures or allow you to lock up the mirror in that special mode and do pure LS shots like the 90mm LS lens on a P6x7.

For flash sync, set it to the desired shutter speed on the lens, set the camera's shutter to 1/8 or slower, attach the flash PC cord to the lens and arm the LS by cocking it with the ring on the end of the lens. You need to arm it after each shot. The TTL metering will only read your camera body shutter speed and not what is set on the LS. You can use that info, however, for balancing the flash if needed.
