55mm soft

Hi All ,

Just received a 67 55mm from KEH and have found it to be soft up to f8 and after that good but not great .
My 645 75mm and 120 Macro are both noticeably better on 645D.

The base opinion is 55mm is one of the sharpest lens from Pentax , should I box it up and return it ?

Thanks
Jon

My copy of the 55mm A is a little soft wide open but sharpens up noticeably by f4 and seems definitely better than the copy tested by Lloyd Chambers in his blog diglloyd. It sits between my 35 and 75 lenses, both pin-sharp, without in any way seeming like a poor relation, and I use it without hesitation in any situation where that focal length is called for.

f4 is wide open for a 67 55mm.

Send it back. if it's the latest 55/4 ( SMC Pentax 67) it should be great. Don't settle for a sub-par copy. There is sample variation between lenses. It took me three tries to get a 45/4 that had decent corner performance.

Sorry - didn't notice the original post was about the 67.

Yes, but that is not a 67 55mm noting the difference between a SMC 67, SMC 6x7 and S-M-C 6x7 generation lenses.

FWIW, the latest version of the 55 has a "floating element". When you turn the focus ring, the front of the lens moves at a different rate than the rear. It seems that the rear focusing mechanism often has some fore-aft play in it - I've personally seen 2 copies that had this, and both were cosmetically in very good condition and seemed to perform well optically.

This thread on photo.net describes the same thing. Hold the lens with the rear facing down and push gently on the outer edge of the rear element (not the glass!) to see if it moves up and down.

According to the other threads it seems to be fairly normal, but I'd be curious whether other owners' copies behave like this, and if anyone knows whether this is how the lens is designed to work.
