I have recently used a 165mm/2.8 with adapter on my D700 for an interview because I forgot to rent the Nikon 70-200 which I usually do. I had to stop down manually and used a flash. Turns out that the 165 is a terrific & sharp lens on my D700 with great bokeh and a nice "film" feel. It's tack sharp at 5.6. I was lucky, though, that focal distance was enough and zooming wasn't neccessarily important to me.
I have tested the 45mm, the 100mm and 105mm on my 645D and they are all great, esp. the 100mm for macro work. Tack sharp at all apertures. The 105mm is indeed a little softer, still good though. I am not sure how all these turn out on a 35mm cam (which one, btw?) but as far as the 165mm is concerned, I can only recommend it!
