Older Nikon lenses should work fine on the D800, don't you think? They do a great job on my D700.

I believe they published a list of recommended lenses, so perhaps not every lens is up to it.

To follow up on my earlier remarks: If I were in the market for a camera, the price difference would be an important factor without a doubt. The 800 is a bargain. Since I have a lot of 645 glass, I might however try to buy a used 645D instead. If I had no 645 glass I would not hesitate to rent the 800 and see if its ergonomics would suit me. I have dupuytren in both hands, so that is a consideration; the 645N suits me, a TLR only because of lesser weight but not so much in grip.

The D700 isn't hard on lenses at all...the D800 is if you want max sharpness from all those pixels.

Even going from the 10MP K10D to 14MP K20D, I noticed a big difference...zooms that looked good on the K10D were just ok on the K20D. You'll notice something similar w/ your zooms, but your primes will probably be ok...
