645N Aperture priority Question

I am trying to figure out whether my Pentax 645N can chose shutter speeds other than the ones on the dial when i am in Aperture priority mode. For example, when the LED is saying 350 (for shutter speed) will it round up to 500 (or down to 250) or will it actually fire at 350 when I depress the shutter??

I would think since the LED is showing 350 for the proper exposure that that's the shutter speed it would use .... or conversely, perhaps it is indicating to me that I should adjust the aperture to get close to either 250 or 500.

Thank you for any info, I am new to film photography,
Cory

I'm pretty sure it's stepless under the hood, but it rounds up/down when showing you the value.

Page 76 of the manual states that in auto mode the shutter speed is stepless from 1/1000 to 30 sec.
Another way to check this is to look at the data imprint on your negatives. I believe you will see shutters speeds there that are not shown on the camera dial.

Adam,
Thank you for the reply. However I am not sure I understand your answer. What does "stepless under the hood" mean? Does the camera only fire on full stop increments (ie. 125, 250, 500, 1000),
Thanks,
Cory

No, the 645n sets whatever shutter speed is necessary, as does the LX. Like that camera what you see in the viewfinder is just for your convenience, the camera will set and fire whatever is needed. The 645n is really like a 35mm SLR on steroids! Wonderful machine....

The shutter speed values you see on the nob and in the viewfinder are in full stop steps. But "under the hood", or inside the camera, the actual setting of the shutter speed is stepless, as explained above, choosing whatever shutter speed is needed with the given aperture.
