Rear curtain sync for 645N?

On my little Olympus XZ-1, I can set the flash for 'rear curtain sync' -- where the flash goes off at the end of the exposure, not at the start.

Is there a way to do this on the 645N?

I don't have any pentax flashes now, but I'm pretty sure the AF-360FGZ had a rear curtain mode and was compatible with the 645N. Rear-curtain mode may require a Pentax flash.

I don't know for certain.

Hi Jon404,

Trailing shutter sync function is flash specific. Therefore, AF 330 FTZ and AF 500 FTZ (all most later models) are both capable of trailing shutter sync on a 645N, However, earlier flashes (ex. AF 400 T) are not. I'm not sure about 3rd party support for this function, but if there's a trailing shutter sync option on the flash and its made for Pentax cameras, then I would venture and say that it would work on the 645N.

I hope this helps.

For Pentax the rear curtain sync is set on the flash, so you need a flash with this capability.

Regards

Thanks guys -- just downloaded the manuals for the AF 330 FTZ and AF 500 FTZ... and both have a trailing-curtain control, at least for 35mm cameras. But here's a surprise -- Amazon wants $983 dollars... that's US dollars, not pesos -- for the AF 500 FTZ. My! At that price, must have psychic command! And the AF 330 FTZ has a fixed head, no tilt or swivel, at a more reasonable $139.

So -- think I'll stick with my Yong-Nuo 460-IIs for now. But thanks for the fast help -- I'll go after that AF 500 FTZ when I win the lottery!

That price is far too high. That said, it seems to have gone up. At least here in the UK I spotted 399 for a new AF 540 which is a higher spec'd flash than the 500, and one discounted at 299 (Park cameras) which equals to about $450. There are new models coming out, so it probably pays to wait, but the 540 can still be had for far less than the older model you spotted at Amazon.

The AF 500 FTZ has been discontinued for years. Second hand prices should be pretty low since it has limited compatibility with digital cameras that use P-TTL instead of the older TTL flash metering; I wouldn't pay more than $100 for the 500 FTZ. Earlier flashes like the AF 280T are actually more useful on current digital bodies because they have an auto thyristor mode.

If you want to use the flash on both you 645 and a DSLR you are probably better off with an AF 540 or AF 360 that supports both TTL on older bodies and P-TTL on modern ones.
