Any working portrait photographers here using the 645D?

I'm playing around with the idea of switching to medium format.

I've been looking at the Hasselblad H4D-40, but its awfully pricey. Decent used ones, if you can find them, are still north of $10k.

I started out years ago on a Pentax K-1000, so I've always had a soft spot for the brand. When I saw the 645D, I thought maybe that was worth looking in to.

I'm interested in the 645D for portrait work. Any portrait photographers here using one? I'd be interested in your thoughts.

Cheers!

Got in contact with Pentax here and they are going to lend me one for a fashion shoot.
The H4D-40 actually has the same sensor as the 645D you know, crazy right

Curious how it will hold up against the 5D mkII and the K5.

Bill Gekas has been using the 645D for 6mos or so. His public gallery is comprised mainly of scenes he does with his daughter - and they are superb.

Wow, those are amazing. Why do 645D images always look so amazing? What is it about Medium Format? That is a serious question. Is it possible to achieve that look on APSC? I

they were likely all shot at iso100 where the CCD sensors will smack a cmos sensor around as far as color and clarity. Combine that with a much larger sensor area with 40mp in it, and there is no way to fairly compare apsc. You can get quite stunning pictures from the aspc sensors, and his pics likely all have some PP done to them, but in a lot of peoples opinions, mine included, low ISO images between a CCD and CMOS sensor just can't be compared fairly.

I would much rather take my K10d to do portraits than my K5 because of the low ISO colors. I also use my K10d for landscape photography because of the colors. I love my k5, I really do, but I just haven't been able to get the same colors out of it

I've only glanced at the gallery, but what I saw was the product of a true expert. Gekas has a brilliant eye for lighting and has some exceptional post-processing techniques...not to mention a model who is cute as a bug and a great concept re-creating the feel of those old Dutch paintings. And even though I don't know him, his work speaks of an artist who is very patient and methodical and deliberate. He obviously (or at least seemingly) really thinks through his photographs before hand and carefully plans out how to achieve the image he sees in his mind.

So, yes, you could create that look on any camera. Or at least most of it. I'd attribute very little of the "wow" factor to the camera.

I owned a 5D2 and now own a K5 as a backup. I shoot primarily with the 645D. In terms of sheer IQ, you will love the 645D. The CCD sensor in the 645D is superb and more than holds it own against any of the CMOS FF or APSC sensors. Close friends shoot with the Nikon D600 (also owns a 645D) and D800. We've compared the cameras. The 645D still rules in terms of pure IQ at lower ISOs. But even at ISO1600 the 645D the IQ remains excellent.

It blows them both out of the water, that's how they compare!

Now if you're talking bang for your buck, it's debatable.

Most of his gallery was made with the K-7 & K-5 cameras. He only recently (6mos?) started using the 645D. That said, there is a distinctly different feel to larger format media.
