I use my 645D for all kinds of photography from documentary handheld to astrophotography on a tracking mount. It is really easy to handhold and can work at low shutter speed without a problem. I have also had it in a blizzard with the snow melting and then freezing on the camera. It is like the Energizer Bunny.

I used a (Pentax) 645D as my 'everything' camera for just under a year. The extra mass increases inertia, and makes hand holding at slower shutter speeds a bit better. With the 55mm normal lens, it fitted into my largish shoulder bag, and was with me pretty much all the time.

When there were low light situations, I sometimes struggled, but then that's always been the case.

Also carrying a solid tabletop tripod, increased the likelihood of those captures where the medium format quality just shines.

Enjoy your 645D, should you buy one.
my experience.
i'm 75 and have arthritis ,i find it easy to do hand held with the 45mm,75mm and the 200mm.with the zooms and 400mm i need a monopod when i use my scooter, and do better with a tripod. if it had to be my only camera ,i would find more ways to skin that cat. i always carry my monopod and have a backpack bag that lets me carry the camera with the75mm mounted, the 200mm,the 45mm and a 2x converter, and battery with ease.

Well, it's been about nine months since I gave the 645D a good ice water mud bath. Had the 35A cleaned and lubed and all is well. While drying out my boots in a warm (electric) oven I got a wild hair and stuck the IPhone in too.

Figured it was a goner, had no response at all, so I figured I couldn't hurt it. Really thought the battery would blow. Well, 15 minutes @ 170, a cool down period and recharge and I am still using it. BUT, I definitely would not recommend that anyone try this!

Well bull, I am 68 years old and that camera is getting heavier or the hills are getting higher! Back pack weighs just short of 40# with the body and lenses. Just cannot part with the image quality though.

Good to hear that you are still out there being active, whatever it takes, thats what keeps us going.

Having used it for several weeks I'd say it's too heavy for general use. You need a tripod.

Also, compared to newer FF bodies, its high-iso performance isn't up to par.

it's as heavy as a canon 1dx...not more not less...the fact that is big is alas a plus for shooting sat low speed...there are many myth about pentax 645d.
and i used the 645d for a year even for street and editorial shooting. in addiction i find i can easily shoot even at low speed with good sharpness. the fax that is made like a brick help a lot with ha

while not on par with the modern dslr, the iso 1600 is very good...downscaled a bit and cleaned create stunning 20 million images.
i used the camera to create portrait in these days during the Ukrain revolution in kiev. I love the character of the image much more than d800 or any other dslr.

Just use the arrow buttons to scroll images and you won't have to worry about messing with the aperture or shutter. I zoom into my images all the time and have never accidentally changed the aperture, so maybe we have different settings somewhere.
for hand holding, the 45-85mm and the 80-160mm may require some curls with the dumb bells and a monopod. I ride a scooter so with a monopod I can do well with the 200 and 400mm lenses. having spent all that money on the camera and lenses, I make it a habit to take it out 50% of the time.

Excellent advice. (Provided your other camera accompanies you the other 50% of the time. )

My MF camera (now the "other" weather resistant one) similarly yields excellent results, making the extra effort well worthwhile. However, a lovely K-3 recently arrived on the sleigh, and has required some outings.

well 50% of the times I go shooting, the other times are devided between a sony a-550m and a-850.

I think that is true of any MF digital system. They are all about the IQ at low ISO.

I think Leica has one of the most portable, but sadly it's about 3 or 4 times the cost of Pentax's system.

I shoot mostly on bright or better days. I use 200 or 400 iso the most, but am ok with 800 or 1000 iso when needed.

Odd, you've shot a 6x6 and 6x7 and saying the cropped sensor 6x4.5 format is constrained by DOF? I'd think getting more DOF for equivalent focal length on a 645D is an much easier go than on the 6x7 format.

Also, you're worried about limited ISO on the 645D? What verity of color ISO options do you have today on 120 roll film? And as a medium format film shooter you should be well aware of the differences between small and medium formats and the situations where they do best.

The 44x33 digital sensor has way way less DOF than any 67 lens/film combo i ever shot with. I am talking about observed DOF. All the charts and calculators still claim that 67 film would be shallower. It just never looks that way in a print.

That's odd. 90-105mm is a "normal" focal length on a 6x7. Look at the DOF scale on those lenses compared to a 75mm lens on a 645 and 55mm on a 645D. But I have to take you word on that.

right

Yes Yes. I see the point. How does a 105mm on a 67 compare to a 55mm on a 44x33 sensor ? Probably a lot closer in observed DOF. Like you , I can no longer test both, as I am digitally committed....

I loved my 645D. Its image quality exceeds anything I had ever used or am using now (the D800). I had to sell it, though, as I wasn't flexible enough with it (it's incredibly slow in many respects) and: the lack of affordable prime wide-angle lenses or wide-angle zooms made me sell it and invest into a more flexibe Nikon system. For what I do, it's absolutely enough. And I still got my Pentax 67II which I regularly use for b&w and prints.

The 645D and the K3, and assorted lenses plus 645/K adapter, make up my main systems along with an Olympus ZX1 and a GoPro Hero 3. With those, I pretty much have it all covered to my satisfaction. I recently cleaned out the last of my Fuji Velvia stock from my refrigerator and sold it for more than I paid for it a number of years ago. A changing world, for sure.
