Pentax 645D--What A Deal.

First of all I would like to say Hi to everyone out there, this is my 1st Thread and I wish everyone many great days of Photo Shooting. This afternoon I was in downtown Toronto, Canada, where I live and I went into one of the Henry's Camera Stores. They have around 15 to 20 in Canada. This one has more of the Pro Equipment. I noticed the Pentax 645D was on Special for $5,750.00. I asked the Sales Lady if this Price was only for the Demo at the Counter, she said no, I could have a Brand New One out of the Box. This Special is until October 10th /13. I know the 645D was selling 6 months ago for $6,999.00, but never this Low. This is an Excellent Price. I am wondering if anyone knows of maybe a Newer Model coming out, maybe a 645D 11 or maybe Pentax is discontinuing the camera. I would like to buy a 2nd Body and not carry a DSLR with me to Weddings any longer. Any News would be Very Appreciated.

M.Z.

There hasn't been any news of a newer model, but it's about time one would come out. The 645D isn't far ahead of the current top-tier full-frame cameras as far as image quality goes.

Adam thank you for responding. For that price I am going to buy another body and then I will have 2 for my Wedding Shoots and one will be my Back-Up.

Dang it!

I was just there on business a few weeks ago and missed it... And I just looked online, and...

Nada. Zip. Zilch. The 645D isn't even listed at the Henry's website any more.

Huh.

Probably means something.

Noser thank you for replying to me. Sorry I did not get back to you sooner but I was on a course up North. Henrys is still listing the Pentax 645D. It is on the Digital Medium Format Site but on Page 2. However it is listing at $6,999.00 not at $5,750.00. I have not been back Downtown Toronto to see if it is still at $5,750.00. Was supposed to be until October 10th /13. My friend went down on Monday and bought the 645D at the reduced price. Have not talked to him yet since I came back. Will talk to him tomorrow.
Happy Thanksgiving.

You're obviously referring to the Nikon D800/800e. I shot the 800 and the 600 against my 645D for an extended period of time. To be sure they perform some functions much better, such as FPS, writing speed. But in terms of image quality the 645D has a 'look' that the Nikons can't match. i know one 645D owner who just sold his 800 because the images simply didn't hold up when compared to the 645D. Part of the reason may be optics and the fact that Nikon has a relatively short list of lenses that can take full advantage of the sensor capability. Or, it may be the differences between CMOS and CCD sensor technology. Whatever the reason, I found the 800 images 'lifeless' and two dimensional and really no more involving than those produced by my K5 or SONY a850.

I run a D800E alongside my 645D and concur largely with the above view. In conditions where either camera can be used successfully, the 645D's results are noticeably (to someone who looks for these things) better - in terms of character and depth. I run both for the many situations in which the use of the 645D is either impossible or significantly disadvantageous - very high ISO, high fps, consecutive long exposure sequences without a dark frame, highly responsive off-centre AF, that sort of thing... In those situations, you can get the shot you would otherwise miss (and do so in high resolution) - at the cost of less character...

I agree. I thought I had seen some news about new sensors about a year ago but I could be mis-remembering.

If they had a 56x41mm (or close) sensor it'd be schhweeeet.

it always happens, you buy a camera when it first comes out and you just happen to have one that drops alot in price.
