645D vs. A7R

Interesting review over at the Imaging Resource site that involves the 645D and A7R. Thank goodness for Ricoh; their tallent and access to $ will hopefully push Pentax into currency across their product line. I would love to see Ricoh support competitive products for all key formats.

Sony A7R Review: First Shots

Impressive results from Sony.

They say that the Sony is applying sharpening in-camera to the 'Raw'. Interesting...

Yes, everyone wants to compete with the 645D. And comparing a camera with the next format up is always a journalistic conceit bound to increase readership and inspire return visits. The question you would have to ask is, would anyone who actually bought a 645D be impressed by these images, or is this just a way to encourage people who might move up to an FF feel better about their purchase?

Here's what you need to know…

QuoteQuote:
(The 645D also reveals the color from the halftone dots in the "grout" in the mosaic, which the A7R still misses - Yes, those little flecks of color in the 645D's image are present in the subject, they're the cyan, magenta, and yellow dots of ink in the offset-printed halftone.)
There's still a reason to buy a 645D. Sad that so many years after it;s launch it's still relevant. What have all these companies been doing with their time?

Very impressed that the 645D is still hanging on, despite being 3 years old. I would like to see an update, perhaps with a larger sensor. Not that I'd likely afford it, but oh the images.

That being said, good show by the sony. Mounting my pentax lenses on one sure is tempting, even though I hate all EVFs I've ever tried.

The 645D is still a great camera. Unfortunately right now FF produces pictures with great color and clarity, too, and you can get a great system for $5k or so.

The 645 has good lenses too but the newer ones are $5k or so.

If the 645DII was 56x41.5 I'd probably get one. At 44x33 the 2.8 lenses don't provide enough advantage for me compared to, e.g., 1.4 lenses on 36x24.

People here complain in droves about how god-awful FF DSLR cameras are from the other manufactures for weight, size and hauling around for every day shooting compared to their pristine Pentax camera and small limited lenses. So all of a sudden an even bigger, heavier and slower MFD camera is just fine with them. It must be that name Pentax on the front that makes the difference.

On a more serious note, I would venture to say MFD cameras are not kind of camera most people here would want to carry around for everyday shooting. But the A7 is the kind you'd carry around for casual shooting. Evaluate its IQ from that perspective.

Me carries P67ii whole day when travel... and usually shoot less than 1 roll a day.

I keep a 645 around the house just to remind me of how awful it is. I should probably pick up an old 5D just to remind me how awful an FF would be. They're getting to be cheap enough to be cupboard ornamnets. My wife has knick knacks, I have cameras. Well truthfully, she has a few film caress of her own in the camera case. But it would be funnier if she didn't.

I'm well aware of that. I see your posts too. Kudos for that and we are the exception; not the rule.

You've got to take it all in perspective. When I shoot Medium Format, I usually lug around a Fuji GX680. Thats a beast that pretty much has to be shot on tripod. My 645N is small and manageable in comparison.

Also, the D800 wins in weight (at least with a smallish lens and without battery grip), as well as a lot of other considerations, but we were mostly talking about the sharpness and color rendering.
