Is it crazy to bring P67 for hiking?

Going to Death Valley, and here is the bag I am taking...

Not a photographer but sure can pack like one, right?

Wife agree to carry for me the P67 from home to destination, not carrying it for me on hiking. Good enough!

Wow, that's a nice set of stuff for DV. Do you have a cable release for the 6x7 and / or the K5? They are a big help. If you have a wider angle lens for the 6x7, I'd bring it too. The 105mm is the normal lens for it but if you have something wider, I'd bring it. Even just the 75mm would be nice for DV. Also, are you sure that ball head can handle the weight of the 6x7 in portrait orientation?

My goodness, I'm envious though. Haven't shot there in 2 years and I miss it. Have a great trip.

I am already ansious to see the results from Ektar 100... The same photo taken with K-5 would be interesring to see...

I wish I was that organized when preparing equipment, probably saves some weight.

I think this is a reasonable kit for your travel. My full P67 kit, packed in its own backpack, is 9.3kg. Add the tripod (2.4kg) and that's quite a lot for a hike. Latterly I take just the 45mm and 90mm lens and filters + 4 rolls of film for planned photography, especially in the alpine area near where I live where there are drawn out climbs and rocky, slippery descents. For car-based photography the whole caboodle comes. A heavy kit is a hindrance when needing to move quickly. I think the carrying arrangement you have worked out is OK, though she might regret it. The P67 is a beautiful camera to use, but it's no lightweight at around 3.2kg.

Why so many batteries?? My Nikon P7700 is still using the battery that was changed in July this year and it's been half-way across the world. It will be due for a recharge in the new year.

Lee, I hike with two 67 bodies and three lenses (45 and both zooms) and I'm an old guy, so you should do okay.

I travelled through northern India in March with a Lowe Pro Photo Trekker - backpack. Inside: Pentax 645, Pentax 645N, AF280T flash, Sunpak 12R Ringlight Macro flash, 6x7 1:4/300mm lens, 1:4 120mm Macro lens, three extension tubes, Sekonic 308 lightmeter, 4 filters and 25 rolls Velvia 50/100. It was a great trip with nice photos of frogs, lizards and monkeys (I love to take photos of animals) and nothing turned out to be a superfluous load (except for the lightmeter). If I would have owned the Pentax 6x7 and 67II I own now, I would have taken one of them with me aswell. Have a nice trip! I wish I were in your place.

What about taking some Velvias with you? Seems, you just use Negative films on your trip. Photos of desert landscape should look extremely nice shot on well saturated slide films...

The wooden handgrip on the 67II seems both redundant and unnecessary. You'll be shooting on a tripod most the time with that Ektar I suspect. I have taken a 60 pound backpack with my 67 in it up Mt. Rainier in my younger days. What you have there is a walk in the park.

I hike with my P 6x7, 45 and 105 all the time.

I'd also suggest ditching the handle, as well as the strap for it. I tend to keep it in a small pack for day trips away from the car. Pull it out take an image and place it back in my pack. It gets annoying hanging around your neck hiking hiking around and in the desert that fine dust is going to be blowing everywhere.

Also you could cut out some weight by picking up a WLF for it. Personally I prefer shooting landscape with it, it will save you another lb or 2.

Yeah take the 6x7, those Ektar 100 negs you get will be worth their weight in, umm, well the weight you carry.
