I wonder if the coming wide angle zoom will be a DA lens; ie for the current cropped 645 sensors. That could make it a lot cheaper...

Yes, I'm curious about that as well. If Pentax continues to produce new DFA designs, that may signal they're keeping their options open for a full frame 645 body. If they start producing mainly DA designs then we're probably looking at the current 44 x 33 mm (ish) sensor format for some time...

Hasselblad has a 24mm and a 28mm for their H series cameras, Leica has a 25mm for the S, Mamiya a 28mm for their Phase cameras, Rodenstock has 23mm and 28mm lenses for tech cameras, and Schneider has 24mm and 28mm lenses. All modern lenses, all a little or a lot more than the Pentax, except for the Schneider lenses. In the MFD world, that would be virtually everybody.

The new wide-angle zoom appears to be a 33-55mm lens. I think it will be in line with the DFA pricing rather than the FA pricing.

What makes you think it is a 33-55 lens? There already is one. Whats needed is a wider zoom due to the crop factor; perhaps a 28-45?

I'm wondering about the second lens since that looks to directly duplicate the 45-85 zoom. I can't imagine that a refresh would be marked as a new lens. All I can think of is adding in-lens SR or making it faster. Either option would be expensive.

My bad. I was looking through a Japanese web site on the new 645Z and there was a reference to a wide-angle zoom, but it was the old FA, not DFA. Hopefully a 28-45mm. That would be nice.

Bad research by me. Looks like there are more MF ultrawides than I was aware from previous looking around. Nevertheless the conclusion remains: the Pentax 25mm is reasonably spec'ed and priced for what it is.

Does Pentax have a leaf shutter lens in the 150mm (ish) range? I'm doing a little poking around, and I don't see anything.

I hope there is such a thing. That would make the 645z very attractive to me. As it is, with a flash sync speed of only 1/125s with the focal plane shutter, its a no go.

All the Pentax 645 and 6x7 leaf shutter lenses are manual focus.

There's the problem right there. To get me to make the jump to MF digital (I shoot film now...I use Mamiya RB67 system) would require modern lenses with electronic leaf shutters syncing to 1/1600 or so. If I'm going to be stuck with mechanical shutters and manual focus....well, I already have that.

I would like to think you're correct, but the DA 25mm is sold at the same price of the formerly offered D FA in the US.

Hope this isn't a dumb question, but here goes…..
Why does the 25mm Pentax SMC 645 lens cost over $4,000?
Even when compared to Pentax's other new lenses for the 645D or 645Z that is significantly higher
Is it particularly difficult to produce UWA lenses for Medium Format cameras?
Is this lens that good?
Thanks
the real question is whether the smc 645 is scaled down to match the smaller 645d sensor. otherwise it's not that much of a wide angle lens.
