Interesting samples. The 645Z seems to work as an urban walkabout camera, kind of like a giant point and shoot, in Photographyblog's hands.

One thing I have to say is that it's going to take me some time to get used to seeing people routinely shooting medium format at ISO 3200 and above.

Wow yeah, ISO 3200 looks surprisingly good. Those sample photos just need some PP and bam! And the wide open aperture photos are something to excite the shallow DoF fanatics!
Looks like this new Sony sensor is a big step in the MF world.

I don't know if those have had any noise reduction applied (whether in camera jpeg or in post), but the ISO 3200/6400 samples look just as useable as those from my D4. If those are SOOC, then that's pretty sweet.

Not SOOC, since they state they reduced them to 75%, and the EXIF says "Adobe Photoshop CC (Windows)" created the files. That, and either some noise reduction was done, or the bricks in jolly old England are melting (100% pixel crop from an ISO 3200 sample):



I saw more noise than this in the ISO 3200 samples I shot on Sunday, but I have to say most of the detail has been preserved, so if that's the camera's JPEG engine, it isn't all bad.

i dont know, maybe its me but im not impressed by these sample images. they are not much better than my sony a99. i really want this camera to be great but the images so far are making me want the 645D..

To be fair the subject matter & lighting is rather dull in almost all the samples

Is it possible that all they did was convert from raw to jpeg and then resize (or just resize the in-camera processed jpeg)? That would account for the EXIF info.
I agree about the sample images being boring snaps, but I think the point was to quickly show high ISO capability more than anything else. Even the better photos posted by Pentax weren't anything special.

What's up with the weird focal lengths? I wasn't aware of any 43mm lenses for 645...

Nevermind, I'm an idiot. They say in the article that they're using the 55 and 25mm lenses, so the info below the pictures must be "35mm equivalent." I hate that. What a lens would look like on a 35mm sensor means nothing to me. Just give me the real numbers and I can do the math myself (which would be ÷1.92 for APS-C "equivalent").

I would love the RAW images of these to see what the camera can actually produce. As its mentioned above , I feel these are to show ISO performance more than anything else. (which is not bad at all considering MF ISO restrictions in the past.

That Scooter shot shows quite a bit of purple fringing.. albeit faint. I wonder when Pentax is going to eliminate that crap from their system.

Is it just me or does it feel like they did a rush job with the samples? The exposures, the focusing, etc all don't seem right for the 25F4 shots. I look at the 25 F4 shots and I have a hard time guessing where the focus is.

No, it's just the standard 'walk-about-for-a-hour-or-two-and-shoot-some-stuff-near-our-office-with-a-camera-we-just-got-an-hour-ago' set of sample shots you see for every camera review or preview on photographyblog.com.

If the weather is good in London, or something interesting is happening nearby, their sample shots can look quite good, if a bit dull. They don't do anything fancy to their shots as a rule - most are just OOC JPEGs with default settings.

And usually they put up some RAW's too. Maybe RAWs and full size JPEGs will appear for the 645Z later.
