Pentax 645Z - Real World Dynamic Range

Dear friends,

Long time no see! For those of you who are curious, here's a link to a "micro-review" I've done on the Dynamic Range offered by the 645Z. I wrote very little, choosing instead to provide interested users with my original DNG file for examination.

I hope everyone is doing well and taking lots of pictures!

Nice cheating!

The ND filter must help too but all in all, this picture has to be "right" to start with.
You nailed that right on the button.
The DR is amazing.

your blog indicates you underexposed the shot by 2 stops? Was that average across the frame, or just the bottom half of the image by 2 stops?

It was deliberately shot 2 stops underexposed across the entire frame in order to retain as much highlight detail as possible.

Haha! Yes, I could have used a Grad ND filter (soft or hard) However, the telltale sign of a grad ND is often obvious on many images, IMO, especially images like this one where many tall buildings encroach upon the sky.

Wonderful light, incredible composition, and a perfect exposure to capture it! Had a play with the DNG, and the 645Z behaves more like a gigantic K-5 file while the 645D files are... CCD-ish.

Well for me this is the first image made with 645Z that impresses me. Great work.

You took this photo on 8/2/14, didn't you? I saw those fantastic rays as well and even had my Z with me, but unfortunately I wasn't able to get to a good angle in time. Amazing shot!

Thanks for the write up and the opportunity to play with the DNG file. The more I learn about the 645z, the more certain I am I must have one- much as I have loved and enjoy my 645D.

The B&W version is okay too. Thanks for the DNG to test drive. It helped scratch the "what if" itch.

Perfect example for B&W looking even better than color.

I think you can improve your picture if you take more time and the right tools...
