25mm and 28-45mm sound great but, they are not mandatory for landscapes. landscapes and wide angle are two separate issues. I have the 35mm and the 45mm lenses, either will do well for landscapes. when used properly even a 100mm lens can be used for landscapes.

I have used lenses over 1000mm for landscape photography before.

They are mandatory if your only wide angle is the 35. 28mm just is not versatile enough in my view. So many times I have been perched on the rocks near the ocean and the 35 just has not been wide enough.

I can't wait for he OS as well, for those fleeting moments, jump out of the car and grab the shot type moments.

The original discussion was about the 25mm and 28-45mm.

Of course landscapes can be taken with all focal lengths, but the question was related to the wide-end of landscape photography.

So assuming the optical performance is as good as the 25mm, what are people going to buy (25 or 28-45) or those with the 25mm, are they also going to buy the 28-45 (and maybe sell their 25mm) - assuming you want something at the wide end!

Just looking for people's thoughts :-)

If I didn't have either lens, I might just have bought the zoom. The fact that I have the 25, changes things a little. Do I sell the 25 to part finance the zoom? I probably won't as you never know when those extra 3mm become valuable.

Hmm, seems the price has just jumped (well in the UK anyway). I am sure yesterday it was pre-order at £3,499 and now it is £3,999 - now makes it £700 more expensive than the 25mm

Just asked one of the dealers and it seems Pentax put the price up. Such a big jump can't be from currency changes, so no idea why.

Has the price gone up for other places outside the UK?

After wondering which way to go I have just ordered the DA25mm. The new zoom looks great but Im after the widest lens available for this system. Like it was mentioned above, every mm counts at the wide end. I personally don't think you could go wrong with either the 25mm or the new 28mm zoom.

My personal preferences on the wide angle are moderate. My FA 45 on 645NII (~28mm in equivalent) and FA 35 on 645D (~28mm in equivalent) are enough for me. Such ultra-wide focus ranges as ~16mm (DFA 25 on film) or ~20mm (DFA/DA on 645D/Z) or ~22mm (DA 28-45 at 28mm on 645D/Z) or ~22mm (A/FA 35 on film) are not really needed in my practice. So, DA 28-45 is much more attractive for me than DA/DFA 25 in terms of focus range. But what to do with FA 35 and FA 45 that I allready have?

I got it and love it. Pretty sharp wide open and the SR is a welcome addition.

FWIW, I have definitely been in a few situations where I needed something wider than my D FA25 and in a couple of cases, I pulled out my K5 with 10-20 to get the shot.
Every mm does indeed count and there is probably a noticeable difference between 28 and 25 (on 645D/Z) when you need wide coverage. With my 35mm I am not opposed to stitching a couple of frames whenever possible, but the perspective distortion at 25mm is pretty extreme, making stitching a challenge.

Here is a frame from a 3 frame pano showing how extreme the perspective distortion can be when string to stitch. The tower is perfectly vertical in real life, btw.
