645 and 55mm for portraits?

Excuse my ignorance but is the standard 55 mm supplied as the " kit lens" any use for portraits or is really a landscape lens?

for a 3/4 shot how close would you have to get to the subject with this lens and does it distort features at that close distance?

Less than 2 meters away, you'd still have a nearly full-figure portrait. You'd have to be pretty close to get a portrait out of it, it's definitely wide.
The 75mm would already serve you, but any longer dedicated focal length lens would help your cause better.

The 35mm equivalent is a 28mm.

It's wider than a classic 'portrait' lens. 85mm on FF seems to be the photographer-consensus portrait lens. 55mm on 645D is about 43mm on FF. 55mm on 645 film is about 35mm on FF.

It will distort in the same manner that a 43mm or 35mm lens will distort. So a bit.

If I wanted to get a portrait lens on the 645D I'd be aiming for a ~100-120mm lens. Some of them are not very expensive.

It sounds like the OP is talking about the 645D/Z if 55mm is the "kit lens". If that's the case, sure, a normal focal length is also fine for doing portraits. You'd have to be more specific if you mean head shots vs 3/4 or full body, etc.

No, the APS-C equivalent is ~28mm.

Read the chart wrong. 55mm on crop 645 is equivalent to 43mm on 35mm or 28mm on APS-C. Never post when you aren't fully awake.

Did I not say 3/4 in my original post?

Thank you every one for the answers.

no - it will distort the same as 55mm lens on 135 format - that's the beauty of MF/LF photography, relatively long focal length lenses give you wider angle of view without the drawback of distortion attached to wide angle lenses - I use quite often my 50mm lenses on Mamiya 6 and Hasselblad V for full body portraits even though on 6x6 format angle of view is similar to 28mm lens on 135 format.

I disagree completely. I'm not talking about the minor non-rectilinear distortion, I'm talking about 95% of the distortion, which is the projection to rectilinear. It will distort the amount as a 43 on 135.

Thought I would show a couple of images that may help. The Man and his son was taken with the 55mm and the Portrait with the 150mm Pentax Lense. I do not see any distortion in the 55mm. But, thats me, and My eyes.
The 150 mm lenses was a great surprise, fantastic lense, not too expensive and much to my surprise, small and light, very light. At first I thought I would end up sending it back,,, no way now.

since 55mm is normal for the 645 d&z , I would think that a 75 or 90mm lens would be best for portraits. one last thing, I never compare my 645 lenses to the 35mm format. I only compare it it the 645 film size since that's what the lens is scaled for. I try thinking the same way as when I compare a lens on a aps-c against a 35mm sensor.
