Help With 645D Lens Descriptions( Designation)

How can I tell which are the Proper AUTO Focus lenses to buy for the 645D Body? I see FA, D SMC etc
Its a little confusing to me. I need the Latest and the Best Glass and Auto focus. So, which designation do I look for. I am in the market for a Portrait lense and would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks so much. I am gald to be a member of this forum.

If it is designated SMC Pentax-A, SMC Pentax-A*, or SMC Pentax LS, it is manual focus. Otherwise autofocus.

The FA 1:2.8 150mm is widely regarded as an excellent portrait lens for Pentax 645.

Thank you. That makes more sense now. I am NEW to Pentax MF. I have just purchased 645D and need a Portrait lense for it. I checked the forum, but none for sale here. Thank you again.

If you look at the listings in our lens database (which includes all original Pentax lenses), you can see which ones are AF and MF (look at the blue icons).
Pentax 645 Medium Format Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

FA, DA, and D FA lenses are auto focus. Others are auto-aperture, manual focus.

Yes, the marketplace here is mainly K-mount (35mm), not nearly as much 645 gear. I think there's just a lot less turnover with the medium format gear. With the 645D having a cropped field of view compared to 645 film, 150 is at the longer end of the portrait range. The Pentax 67 1:2.4 105mm with the 67-645 adapter would be an excellent shorter focal length option, however it is manual focus. There's also the FA 120mm macro, which is autofocus, although of course not everyone likes a macro lens for portraits.

I truly appreciate the help you have all given me. I can now understand how the lenses are designated. Now to find one USED( the FA 645 150mm f/2,8 ) is what I am looking for. Thanks again

My favourite portrait lens on the 645D is the 2.8/90mm MACRO. Awesome
