Pentax 645D Zoom Lense Question

I am New to Pentax MF. Just want to know how Pentax 645D FA, DFA Zoom Lenses? Are they that much heavier than Primes and Mainly How is the Image quality? The reason I am asking is the price of the FA645 150mm is kind of expensive. Yes, GREAT lens but I will be using it primarily for Portraits. Thats why I was thing of a Zoom that has this zoom range. I appreciate any suggestions and Thank you.

There are two autofocus zooms covering 150mm, the FA 150-300 f/5.6 and the FA 80-160 f/4.5. The latter would of course be the better choice as a portrait zoom. It weighs double the FA 150 but costs less, typically half to two thirds the price. All this info is available in the lens review section.

I will say that if you are considering the older 645 A 80-160 zoom (manual focus), I'd steer clear of that lens. It's not a great lens. I can't speak to all the older 645 manual focus zooms, but generally, with these, I believe it's safe to say that you are better wit prime lenses.

I have a 45-85 A and a 45-85 FA. They are both very good, and up to 55mm even usable with the 2x converter, although not that sharp any more. But still 55mm + 2x Shows clearly more Details than just a crop out of 85mm. You have to set the lens to f/6.3 or 7.1 to achieve this. More open is too soft, starting at f/8 at the lens (which is f/16 in total when using the converter) it becomes soft again.

I was no that happy with the 80-160. I had two of the a Version, both soft on the outer parts of the Frame on the 645D. Even stopped down.

The 55-110 is really good stopped down at least one stop till about 80mm. Beyond this, you Need f/11 to get really sharp borders, but that's acceptable for landscape work.

I never had the 33-55 and 150-300. Nor the new 28-45.

The 6x7 90-180 ist better than the 80-160 645, but still not that good as the 45-85mm ist. Using the 45-85 stopped down a bit, it can be hard to tell if the zoom has been used, or a 55 SDM or 75/2.8. The 6x7 90-180 is good, but not that "vivid, three dimensional" as the 45-85 Pictures are, or the 150/3.5.

After comparing the FA 45-85 to the new DA/DFA lenses, I wasn't at all thrilled with it: it produced hazy images and wasn't quite as crisp as the primes.

Medium format is all about image quality, so I'd recommend sticking with primes if that's your priority.

Thank you all. I will stick to the Primes. I am now looking for the Pentax SMC 645 150mm f/2.8 IF lens USED. Thanks again,
