X-rite Color Checker software bug update. Disappointing

X-Rite still have no interest fixing the known memory problem with Color Checker & large files. This is disappointing from a company I've supported over the years.

They're selling a product that is not fit for purpose with larger file cameras. Will be interesting to see what happens when the new 50MP Canon cameras come online and hit this problem.

This email just arrived from X-Rite (11 Feb 2015):

Case Subject: insufficient memory err of colorchecker passport

Dear Rob,
Many thanks for your request.
Would really like to provide better news, however there is no agreement yet, when we will get an update of the software [ColorChecker]. I have passed your request again to the Product Management Teams for their recognition.
Kind Regards, Liane

Dear Rob,

Many thanks for your request.

Unfortunately there is indeed a known issue, that very large files with a very high resolution / data depth cannot be processed by the ColorChecker Passport software. This issue is addressed to the Product Management and is planned to be fixed in a next update of the software. A time line for a new version is not yet communicated.

However, you might want to try selecting a significantly lower resolution / data depth, when you are taking a shot from the ColorChecker chart, just to create the profile. Once the profile is ready and available within Lightroom, your production shots can then be done with the highest resolution again, and the profiles can be assigned to your high res shots.

Kind Regards,

Out curiosity what files and size are you having trouble with?

Have you tried what they suggested in their first correspondence to achieve the evaluative shot?

Full .dng from 645z. None of their advice works and some makes no sense (like cropping .DNG files smaller). They accept there is a memory buffer issue with their software that was designed with cameras had much smaller files.
A work around is to use the Adobe standalone DNG profile manager, but this is a clunky workflow hassle. There have been no software updates for 5 years. Long overdue. They keep marketing and pushing the product which is flawed. They're ignoring it because we're the minority of users at the moment.

So 645z doesn't have an option for a smaller/faster raw image like, say, the Nikon D4 (full frame, 1.2x crop, 1.5x crop and 5:4 ratio)? I wonder if they could add that in firmware?

Correct, you can't get a raw file out of the 645Z that's small enough for ColorChecker to use without crashing due to memory buffer size. It appears that some may have had success, but most aren't. Don't buy X-Rite ColorChecker until they fix this problem

This is one of the reasons why I stopped using theX-rite Color Checker...there are some good alternatives out there that will work with High MP cameras.

What would be your best recommendation? I'm thoroughly annoyed at buying an X-Rite product and it not working, and them not caring. Happily ditch them and their other products given this saga.

Have you tried using Adobe DNG Profile Editor. You can build a color chart based on your Color Checker Passport.
Open the editor and then click on the CHART TAB, then
1. File, OPEN DNG.
2. Place the 4 circle tabs on the matching color patches.
3. Select the Color Tables you want to create.
4. Create Color Table
5. Then File, EXPORT 645Z Profile
(I like this option as it allows you to adjust the hue/sat/lightness, which means when it comes to skin tones I can adjust my profile for a less saturated red/orange for skin).

Yes, my comment above mentioned it as the only workaround, but clunky compared to the LR plugin. It means few profiles compared to what I should be doing on some jobs. Your instructions are useful for people to have. Thanks for posting them.

Canon 5DSR

Well, I have the Canon 5DSR. The .CR2 files are 65MB, the DNG files are about 54MB

I got the same out of memory issue

I then tried the MRAW setting, it produced a smaller CR2 file - about 37MB, and then Colorchecker software worked fine

Bugger, so xrite have a possible avenue/workaround to avoid fixing the problem by telling canon users to use MRaw.

They're avoided all requests and social media urgings to tackle this problem for a year now. Still on firmware 1.0

I just did the M RAW thing on my own. I assume that it will be valid from a color perspective.

I've logged a support ticket with Xrite, will let you know what they say

I'd love to hear of any. The only one that looks similar and has a Lr plugin is the SpyderCheckr and I get advice that it's crap.

Xrite hv a good product. If only they'd stop milking an old product for all it's worth and actually update it's firmware to keep up with the times.

Curious - has anyone tried exporting a lossy DNG from Lightroom and using that for XRite just to get the profile? With a 36 MB dng from my K3, it goes down to 11MB - maybe it would reduce the size enough on a 645z file for you to use the XRite software.

Nix that, I just tried importing it into x-rite and it says it's an invalid file
