Rear Converter-A 645 1.4X

I am considering FA* 300/4 along with Rear Converter-A 645 1.4X for a flexible 300/420mm kit. Weight of 300/4 is not a concern for me, since very little of my shooting is handheld. How well does the TC work with the 400/4 in terms of IQ? Alternative would be 300/5.6 plus 400/5.6, but I would prefer 1 lens +TC vs 2 lenses if IQ is there. Shooting 645z. Thanks.

John

I bought my TC 1.4 used and received no instructions, but I did notice the other day while tesing it on my 300/5.6 that the AF feature did not work. Do not know why as yet.

I beilieve the AF system does not work with f-stop of 8 and higher, which is what you have with 5.6 lens with 1.4x TC... MF only at those apertures.

The 2x and 1.4x converters are A series lenses, so no AF even if the lens is. The 1.4x is very good; I sold my 2x and the general consensus is that it degrades a bit too much. Here's cropped example of the 1.4x used with the 600mm.

P.S. John, did you get my reply to your pm at GetDPI? Their system had some serious problems.

Tom,

Thanks for the info. I guess I missed the fact that the 1.4x TC was manual focus only, notwithstanding the lens is AF. Need to think about this some more. Regarding your PM on getdpi, I received an e-mail informing me that I had a new PM, and it included the text of your PM. Never was able to view the PM, though. I also tried to send you a PM that I had received message... so thanks for your response, and again, thanks for your input on this thread.

both tc's are manual focus only. i've used the 2x with the 645 200mm, the 5.6 400mm, and the 67 300mm. my iq results have been " very good".

Thnaks so much for that info all. Now I will just get at it instead of wondering why no AF.
