I had the lockup problem in Scotland last year. It was fairly repeatable, in ~1°C weather, shooting panoramas with mirror lockup. This, even with freshly charged batteries. I stopped using mirror lockup, which helped considerably.

Did you shoot the shots in quick succession? Maybe it was writing the previous while you were already doing something else.

Not specifically germane to the OP's query, but I believe this happens with most electronic gear. Last night my BluRay player locked up. I had to roll out the Media Center, unplug and replug it. Same happens periodically with my Wireless Access Point. Unplug/Replug it and I'm good for several months.
