Looking for a 300mm lens with a tripod mount. I know the FA has one but it's considerably more expensive than the A version. Doesn't sound like there is any real difference in IQ and I'm good with manual focus so if I can save some bucks....

The A series 300/4 is a pretty small lens, it does not look like a 300. I don't think it ever came with a tripod collar, and I'm not sure where you would mount one.

Actually, as I get older - I have found that my eyesight is not conductive to manual focus, especially for the longer focal lengths. Earlier this year, over the holidays, I picked up a 60-250 with the 1.4x teleconverter.

The one thing I can say on this setup, is that you need a rail that supports a front mounted assembly. Hence the screw hole on the leading edge. There are only a couple of vendors that support this.

Sorry, should've specified; 645 A 300mm. This lens is longer and heavier than the DA 300, which has a tripod collar. Thanks

Have you looked at the RRS setup? They offer a very solid rail which is good for the 645Z and long lens. I looked at mine, but there are no part numbers on the rail nor on the roller extension.

It's a little to wide, my quick and dirty solution was some electric insulation tape

Hello everyone,

Any new inputs on the tripod collar for the Pentax A* 300mm? Or any specific setup using RRS stuff which can be conjured to support this lens reliably?

I am looking at a A* (mint condition - optically superb with not even a speck of dust inside) at 300 USD which a friend of mine wants to sell and a FA* at 630 USD (near mint - it has some dust inside). If I can somehow work out the tripod collar which is absolutely rigid and reliable, I guess I can go for the 300mm A*.

I would be thankful for early reply as I need to make the decision soon (may be even today).

Adding an adapter to an already long and heavy lens would further make it longer and heavier. It is as expensive as the 645 FA* 300mm (or sometimes 100 USD more on eBay). Add to it the cost of the adapter and the 67 M* 300mm becomes a more expensive, heavier and longer option in manual focus than the 645 FA* 300mm in autofocus. I therefore feel it would be better to stick to the 645 lenses.

Bought the FA* 300 f4 finally. Comes with tripod collar. Problem solved :-)
