Would You Do It?

If you already had a 75 f4.5 6x7 lens and found a 75 F2.8AL lens for a good price would you buy it? I'm faced with that dilemma now. It's shorter, lighter and faster but do I need it?

Buy it, live with it for a few months, then sell the one you don't use.

My view is that it's better in every way, except perhaps for distortion. It's one of my favourite lenses of all. So, unless you do work where the distortion issue is critical (I don't notice it in my work), then go for it! Of course if you use the older lens stopped down, you probably won't see the benefit of the new lens much...

What my thoughts were is it anymore sharp than the other one. Both are SMC lens. Being a bit faster and lighter it's a more desirable lens.

You can never have too many lenses.

My wife would disagree!

I find it to be sharper, but the old version is pretty sharp if used stopped down (hence my earlier comment about that), so it really comes down to how you use the lens.

After using the 75 f/4.5 for 20 years, I can safely say that it is one of the top 3 sharpest of the entire lens line for this system.

I have no problems with the 4.5 lens other than it can be a mite difficult to focus in some situations. It's size doesn't really bother me much and it's silky smooth to focus-probably the smoothest I've got in any format. It's a hard call.

The 75/2.8 is one of the few 67 lenses I would by without a second thought if the combination of right price and available founds were there.
So IMHO go for it, if you can afford it

I have all three of the Pentax 75mm lenses which are great and yes the 75/2.8 is worth the extra cost..

It's the handling, minimum focusing and macro capabilities that make it the best all around Pentax 6x7 lens for me.

Also it's very sharp!

Its a really really great lens. I use that one and the FA 75mm for 645. I keep them both for work with the Z. I really prefer the brightness of 2.8 for viewing.

Well, I procrastinated and now it's gone. I reckon I didn't need it anyway. I won't get another for $698.
