It is now listed on the Pentax US website for US $1099. WOW thats a great price. The sample images look sharp across the frame too.

Looks like an error price to me. It's 1549 in UK, and while it's usually rip off UK it's not usually as bad as that. I'm guessing it's meant to be $2099 and it will end up getting corrected before stock is available.

Highly problematic. If it turns out to be a better lens than the A and the FA, Pentax has rekindled my interest. I already like the FA, and I really like this focal length. Bad for my checkbook though.

If Pentax is going to upgrade some of the existing lens plus add new news from time to time, it does make sense. Modest upgrades to a select number of lens will nicely compliment the new lens. The upgraded lens will not cost as much as the new ones, but the increased performance will go nicely with the 645Z.

Agreed, it makes total sense that they upgrade lenses as they go, either because the old stock run out (or is running out) or because the old lenses' performance is not up to task anymore. I think that the new glass elements in the new 35 could make for a nice improvement in IQ, but that has to be seen - for those needing this focal length in a prime, this is certainly good news, especially if Pentax will not get too greedy with the pricing...

I'm not concerned with the screw drive but it would have been nice to add weather resistance.

Screw-drive is indeed not supposed to be a problem at equ. 28mm fv.
But for sure, weatherseeling looks easy to add to such a lens... I wonder why they didn't.
Could the MF/AF clutch make it difficult ?

The new lens list at Pentax/Ricoh is more than interesting http://us.ricoh-imaging.com/products/lenses/645-lenses/. Obviously, the new 28-45, 35, 55, and 90 are there to stay. Also the 45-85, 55-110, 80-160, and 150-300 zooms. Then there are the 75, 120 macro, the 300 ED. Gone are the 45, 150, 200, and the 400. Hard to tell whether this is an incomplete web design job or something of significance.

If this present list is of any significance there could be a new portrait lens (150/200 replacement) in the future. Don't know what they'll do with the 45 and the 200. Glad they kept the 120 and 300 for right now, these are still great lenses. A new 400/500/600 would be nice, especially since the 400 was a well corrected lens and very portable, and the 600MF was also excellent. I guess they'll replace the zooms as planned then. Surprised the 75 remains for right now, likely due to its compactness and long-time popularity, even though its an odd focal length for the 33x44 sensor. They should use the 67 AL design for a replacement as it is also fairly compact.

For me this new line-up indicates a potential change in their lens line-up that is somewhat necessary. Perhaps not for the 645D owner, but with the 645Z, several of the older lenses are starting to show their age, definitely the 45 and also the 150 at wider apertures, and it would be nice if they found a successor just like the 35. I care less about the zooms, especially for medium format, but that is just my personal opinion. Especially the 55-110. The 150-300 is also not that great, but not bad and very versatile.

I remain hopeful for a wide prime, but that remains to be seen. Pentax has a long history of CP+ introductions, as their Japanese market appears to be the major target audience. Perhaps we'll hear more then.

It looks to me like they ditched the clutch with this redesign.

Very much interested. As much as the 28-45 intrigues me I just can't bring myself to spend that much cake on the lens. I can afford one "big boy" lens and I think I'm sold on the 90. BH matched the price Adorama was running on the 55, ran me 4 and change. But I can't do the 90 and 28-45. At this point in my life I'm all over the place. I was shooting almost exclusively landscape and then I started graduate school and I'm working on many different projects.

It does look like that, but that also means that the focus ring can no longer be directly coupled to the screw mount, meaning that this uses a silent motor like the other new lenses.

On the shown picture, the clutch is in Manual focus position, hiding the "Autofocus" print that appears once the barrel is extended a bit.

Can't see them doing that, but leaving the aperture ring/sealing, etc alone.

Ah, my mistake. I "read" the barrel wrong.

In other news, the lens is now $1,599 on B&H.

I ordered one at the low price. No cancellation so far, so I am hoping it was an early bird special, not a mistake.

I am not so sure about that, it looks all the way up. There is no gap at the top for it to move into.

On the UK page:

HD PENTAX-D FA 645 35mm F3.5 AL [IF] - RICOH IMAGING UK LTD.

I can't see a AF/M button there. This would lead me to believe it is still the clutch type.
