I don't think we've gotten an official response to this question yet, but some say it has something to do with production of the front element. We'll aim to find out at CP+.

An old story already....
Fact is D-FA version was discontinued first, around end 2013, and thereafter the DA product was dumped beginning of 2014, not even figuring in the professional materials (papers like "645Z professionnal standard") surrounding 645Z's release.
And later also disappeared from the ricoh's official sites product line.
Strange situation indeed.
One can imagine that a subcontractor fails, shortening production momentarily ; but after 24 months, Pentax should have found an alternative.

I believe it is for a few reasons, The service tech I had spoken to told me that he has repaired quite a lot of the DFA and DA 25mm over the years, mainly due to varying quality control issues and assembly quality. He said it was quite common for the DA lens to fall apart and work its internal screws loose. They were problematic to misalignment and softening on the edges, and to be honest had unacceptable CA for a high priced lens. I did love my lens though, it was pretty sharp. Hopefully the future will see a revised version or something slightly wider, like 21mm.

The autofocus on mine has stopped working. At least this time it is stuck on infinity, so it is pretty useable...

If you can ask if they're planning a replacement and if not why? And then request that they do

I thought it had to do with a company that made one of the glass elements going out of business or just not making that element any more.

In the long run, I think Pentax felt like they replaced the 25mm with the 28-45 zoom.

This isnn't the first time that I have read that Pentx felt like the 28-45 did replace the 25 so clearly for them they feel it did replace the 25. I for one would love to see another 25, not sure if a 21 would be too wide for me but right now, 35 isn't wide enough and I might need to start weight training to carry the 28-45 around.

Yeah, those 25s are hard to find! I'm keeping an eye out too if anyone wants to unload one. But the bank account probably need a little time anyway.

That's what has been said by Adam, and meant by me.
Was there only one company in the world able to melt and turn that front-element ?

Impossible, or irrelevant...

I have the 28-45 and the 25 and certainly don't feel that the zoom replaces the 25. The difference in focal length might not seem much but in terms of angle of view, makes a difference in a surprising number of situations.

I too wish for something wider - 21 or 20 would be stupdendous! I would buy it like a shot (especially if it's f4 or faster).

I would buy it if it was f/5.6!
