My Goodness - The 100MP Digital Camera Has Arrived!

PhaseOne now has a new digital medium format available with a 100MP Sony sensor - https://www.phaseone.com/en/Products/Camera-Systems/XF100MP.aspx

Watch their 2 videos on the biggest monitor you have. Incredible images, but so is the price ($48,000).

Not to mention the storage requirements for the RAW shooters.

I am thinking Pentax 645Z-100 with an accompanying range on new high quality D-FA 645 lenses, at half the PhaseOne price

Stunning imagery though, in the PhaseOne videos, thanks for sharing

If one can afford it, it is the ultimate camera. This is THE camera for landscape guys. 30x40 inch prints at 300dpi... wow.

I guess a body and three lenses will be well north of $60K. Until then a 645Z with a set of three of the best of new lenses at $16K will have to suffice! No wonder 645Z is so well received.

The 100mp would be stellar for those who would take advantage of it. What I'd love is just a bigger sensor - even if it stays at 51mp.

But I'm a people guy, so thats mostly related to my DoF fetish

The thing that I think we lack the most is a workflow editing solution that is fully optimised for our camera. C1 does wonders for Phase One sensors.

Also, I would only wish for EFC shutter on the Z, for landscape and longer lenses that would be a real boon. More megapixels would be good, but there a more important items that need addressing first.

I would also take an EVF, but I doubt that will happen any time soon (or at least an optional body that has one for those who want it)

That Phase One advertisement says digital has passed film in dynamic range for some time now and says it has 15-stops of DR. If that is Engineering DR, then subtract 2 to 3 stops from the low end of that DR you will most likely never use due to noise a color shifts resulting in 12 to 13 stops of "photographer's DR".

And that statement assumes someone shooting film is not compressing their highlights during development, I suspect, because one of my digital cameras advertises something like 14.8 EV of DR and no way does it match my BW film in DR when I compress the hell out the the highlights with a 3-stop over exposure and radical under development. So someone there is lacking some film experience to make that claim. But, on the other hand, that is BW only and not so true for color film.

Marketing speak need not stick to actual facts in every given situation. Would be useful if they did, because although film is often seen as niche, a camera that costs $48,000 before you buy lenses is niche by its very nature...

My goodness, what a price! If I need that much detail, I'll just use my 4x5 instead. 40 X 50 inch prints are no problem.

But you can also buy 128 MP scanning backs for you 4X5. Perhaps one should buy both.

I would need a new laptop to postprocess that files... but on the other hand if I had money for 100MP camera a new laptop would be dirt cheap for me
