There are lights that you can do this with. I believe it's a German company and the brand name is Priolite. Wish my Profoto B1's worked with the Pentax, in terms of HSS. Check out the link below:

I have looked at those but they are really costly.

I've got a priolite here at moment. The high speed sync one.

It works exactly as advertised.

You know, I've just got a cheap Acon for my K-30 and it does P-TTL and HSS effortlessly ... it may be worth experimenting with.

Hopefully, Pentax will come out with a leaf shutter lens so that you don't have to rely on certain lights to utilize HSS. However, a leaf lens will like cost more that buying a Priolite. I do sense that there will be some cheaper lights coming out that will offer HSS to a variety of camera brands.

I was wondering about those. But doesn't the camera have to have a HSS setting?

Like all the Pentax DSLRs, the 645Z should do HSS automatically if you attach any HSS capable flash or controller.

You are correct, alas it does not work for many controllers that support HSS. I have tried with a number of brands of controllers including Pocket Wizard and Odin along with the Indra 500 and Rovelight 600 which supports high speed flash without success including Manual Mode

The 645z recognizes the controller as a flash unit and automatically sets the speed to 1/125th regardless of the shutter speed set in manual mode. The only solution I am aware of is Priolite which is too expensive for me.

I have sent several emails to Profoto about extending HSS on the B1 to the Pentax 645z, but they have given no indication that they are going to update this feature for the Pentax brand.

Hang on, Mike ... the controller of course has to support P-TTL, too, which is manufacturer specific. HSS requires it.

Someone who owns both a 645Z and a Pentax crop camera could take an inexpensive hit for the team and try the Acon.

I recently got the Acon triggers but haven't used them for real yet. I have a 645D that I have been meaning to try HSS on the D with those triggers. I'll try to get around to see how they do together and can report back.

It seems to me that if the D4s and D800 can do it then the 645z could do it with a firmware upgrade. After all it's just firing multiple bursts of flash during the exposure if I am understanding it right, with Nikon. If the 645z is to be considered a high end fashion camera this is something that needs addressing. I have often wonder if third party companies write firmware and are there charges after the first firmware comes out. Anyway if your listening Pentax, Please?
