Taping 645z Screen to make 6x6

Hey guys,
I've got a 645z and I want to frame in 6x6, without having to imagine the edges cropped off. Does anyone know if anyone has tried:
. Putting strips of black masking tape over the focusing screen (below the tray that holds it so focus isn't thrown off!) to make a 6x6 frame?
. OR has anyone tried actually painting, with a thin layer of paint, a piece of ground glass for the 645z and placing that inside the tray?
Any leads on this appreciated.
Ash

I don't know for sure, but I believe the focusing screen is the same size as the sensor, 33x44 mm. If I'm right about that you will not get a 60x60 mm focusing screen inside the 645z. I cant imagine there would be enough space for it.

If you are only talking about making the view finder image square without cropping (133% of the sensor image height), I also doubt there will be enough physical space inside the mirror house. And even if you find or make space enough, I believe the prism and view finder optics wont cover that large surface.

Disclaimer: I don't know for sure as I don't have a 645z or that detailed specs of the view finder system.

I'm talking about customizing the screen that's in there - taping off the glass or painting it or putting tape over the base of the tray.

What's the issue with just cropping to square in post?

Cropping a Pentax 645x to square gives you 3.3x3.3 not 6x6.

Jesus. You get the idea. Of course it's not going to be 6x6. Let's just say square. Is that alright?

And of course I can crop square in post. I'm not a ing 6 year old. The reason I want to do this is for framing when I'm shooting. I much prefer framing within a square than imagining where the crop will be.

Happy? Is that clear enough for you?

The only question is "will you be ok with the effect of this custom focus screen on the metering of the camera?". I would definitely avoid the masking tape option fearing that it might fall out and drop some glue in the mirror box.

I would not mess around with the original focusing screen.

This is what I would do. Get this unit http:Pentax DK-80 WC Focusing Screen for 645D and 645Z Cameras 38583
Try regular opaque Scotch tape as it is as thin as they get and leave little or no residue. Light will go through it but the image will be blocked. Looks like the edges of the grid might make a square crop.

BTW, you are definitely a breath of fresh air! You haven't even gotten here and you have managed to insult a whole bunch of people who might save your photographic ass one day.

Now go try the solution and report back.

I wouldn't bother with further replies. The person who made the post you quoted (which I've edited) is no longer a member of the forum.
