Complimentary system to 645Z

Hi
Just wondering what other systems you guys use as a compliment to your 645?

I am thinking of getting the new Fuji xPro2 and a 10-24, 16, 35, 50-140 and 100-400. Either that or a Nikon D500 and lenses.

I just can't obviously fulfill all my requirements with 645, and the new K1 I doubt will fulfill what I need.

What's everybody else using right now?

Cheers, Scott

Hello Scott,

I am using a K3 with a few lenses (Pentax 16-50, 60-250, Sigma 8-16, 10-20, plus a Pentax 50 f/1.2 manual focus), which has the added bonus of sharing all the same accessories, batteries, etc with the 645z making it much easier and lighter to travel with. As well, this way I share the same file format and basic processing, colours and so on are consistent enough, etc. I come from a Nikon D800E and Sigma SD1 Merrill before using Pentax, and Phase medium format before the Nikon - Sigma, and so far this setup is the best I have ever had as image quality and overall convenience / flexibility and so on. Overall, though no system is perfect, I am very happy with this solution, I think the K3 compliments the 645z very well. Best,

Vieri

Feedback on the Fuji

Hi Scott,

Not able to suggest anything as I don't use a Z. Yet.

However you identified the Fuji and I remember a bloke by the name of Bill Gekas down in Melbourne used the 645D for a while and his latest tool seems to be the Fuji (alongside his K3). His Flickr page is here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/billgfoto

He might be able to provide some useful feedback if you drop him a line.

Hooro for now,

Tas

Depends what you will be photographing with your other kit....

Smaller / lighter? I would have thought you'd be better off sticking with the same sensor. So a Sony a7r2. Or its previous version.

I went with a Sony rx100 3 as my scouting camera. Same sensor as the z. Less pixels. But fantastic files to work with. A tiny!

Faster work:
I have had Fuji gear: lenses are great but for fast moving stuff the autofocus is poor...xt1 included. Sold xe1&2, x100 and the Xt1. Kept all the lenses as I'm sure they will get there soon.

In the end I am glad I kept the 5d3 and lenses for events weddings etc

Scott,

Wait a few more weeks until you see the "K1." It is made to complement the 645Z. Can't say more but you are in for a nice surprise. Pentax made this baby to give you every reason to stay in the Pentax family. No need to add other brand gear to your bag. The IQ will blow the D500 and the Fuji into dust. It is literally a baby 645Z.

I am a K3 owner. I went to the CES show to check out the 645Z for a possible upgrade. I had the rare chance to see the new FF (the name was taped over). I held it. Shot with it. The IQ is as close as you can get to a 645Z. and the price is a no brainer. I will pre-order as soon as it is announced in a few weeks. I still want the 645Z but with this baby, I am sure I can survive for a while until I get the funds to add the 645Z to the mix.

I use a 645Z, a 645D and a K-3, soon also a K-1 (I hope!)
There's no alternative for me.
Oops, I forgot the Q7! 😉

You could just get the 645 to K mount adapter. That way you don't need to bring additional lenses with your system. I personally have used the 67 to K mount, back in the film days, but haven't used it since my dSLR.

I'm looking at this option. My complement/other system is a Pentax K-3/K-5IIs. For wildlife I'd been using the APS-C exclusively, but I recently picked up a FA400 for the Z and have been very impressed with it, and with the 1.4 teleconverter I don't see any appreciable IQ fall-off. Bottom line is I'm starting to use the Z for wildlife more. Throw in an adapter and the K-3 plus DA 12-24 and I think I'd be covered pretty well if I had a problem with the Z.

I have done just that. I have three 645 lenses and a 6x7 lens. I got a cheap adapter and they all work perfectly on my K3. As a matter of fact the 120mm Macro lens from the 645 line up is my go to lens for all my studio product photography work on the K3. The lens is unmatched for its quality and when you consider the price, it is a bargain and then some.

The new FF (K1?) will do even more with the 645 lens line up. There have been references to it (how and what) in previous PF posts. The FF becomes a junior 645Z with this capability. I tried a pre production unit and I cannot wait to see the final shipping product.

I have a Canon 5DsR with an EF 11-24L & a Sigma 150-600 C which covers the ultra-wide and telephoto ends and the Pentax 645z takes care of the wide, standard and short telephoto middle.

This is something i'm constantly battling with.

I have a Canon rig at the moment but am really ready to get rid of it all.

I think the sony a7r2 looks to be a good bit of gear, the problems I had when I tried it was I hated the ergonomics - it was comically small. And the battery life is laughable.

On the plus side, it has some serious IQ and the lens options for it are really fantastic.

I felt the same way about the A7RII ergonomics too. Wait for the Pentax FF. You will get a lot more bang for your buck from the Pentax. It is a 645Z junior! It will not match the Sony for video. It does not have EVF but if you want top notch still images, you will be thrilled. Just give it a few more weeks.

I went from a Canon setup to the Z and an A7rII rig and couldn't be happier. While I prefer to shoot with the Pentax, a lot of times it's just plain inconvenient to lug around (which is why I bought the Sony).

Well thats why I am not keen on the K1, as I just want a smaller rig. I have to ask why do I need a 645Z Junior when I have a 645Z. Its not like it will be a small as an A7rII or Fuji Xpro2.

Plus, I want something small for convenient travel shots.

645 to K adapter is out of the question as it has zero functionality on my DA and DFA lenses.
